2:24PM EST November 25. 2012 - North Carolina State had parted ways with head football coach Tom O'Brien after six seasons.
Sunday's surprising announcement came a day after the Wolfpack (7-5) won their season finale against Boston College where O'Brien, 64, had coached for 10 seasons before coming to N.C. State in 2006 to clinch its third consecutive winning season.
This season's ledger featured an upset of Florida State but also some uneven performances in losses to North Carolina and Virginia. Overall, O'Brien compiled a record of 40-35 at N.C. State in his six seasons, with a 22-26 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
"Coach O'Brien's service to N.C. State over the last six years has been sincerely appreciated by Wolfpack Nation," said athletics director Debbie Yow in a statement on the school's website. "We especially appreciate his attention toward NCAA rules compliance, a value that will continue to be held by N.C. State. We wish him well in future pursuits."
O'Brien's contract runs through December 2015, and the school will owe him roughly $1.2 million spread over the next three years. Depending on whether O'Brien's assistants get other jobs, the school could be on the hook for another $850,000 for them.
Offensive coordinator Dana Bible will serve as interim coach, and all assistant coaches will be retained for bowl preparation, the release said.
Yow is scheduled to meet with the media at 5 p.m. ET Sunday.
So how long will it be before Cowher is named the new HC at NC State?
