A 19-year-old at Virginia's Liberty University has been identified as the student shot dead by a school police officer after allegedly attacking the officer with a hammer in an off-campus dormitory.
Joshua Hathaway from Lubbock, Texas, was shot and killed early Tuesday morning by a Liberty University Emergency Services officer in Lynchburg, WDBJ7 reported.
According to a search warrant obtained by the station, Hathaway told a security officer that he had been robbed and his vehicle stolen around 4 a.m.

During his report in the lobby of a “women’s-only” dormitory, he allegedly pulled a hammer out of his clothing and assaulted the officer.

"The student was shot and killed and the officer was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment," the university said in a statement just after noon.
School officials said the shooting occurred in the lobby of Residential Annex II. Hathaway's vehicle was found parked outside the building before towed.
His roommate speaking to police said the 19-year-old had been acting unusual as of late, according to WBDJ7.

“The entire campus, including Annex I & II, are open and operating as normal,” according to a statement on the school's website. “This appears to be an isolated incident and there is not any ongoing concern for the safety of students or the community.”
