Above the fray.

Thanks

Just heard the first few minutes and Coke is being consistent. Same things he told the late Kay Slay in his video series about the origins of Hip hop.

Specifically that he was really in the streets, and what separated what he and Herc were doing from what the other djs were doing. The other djs played at established clubs with ID requirement, age limits, and dress codes. Herc played at venues where the YOUTH could attend.
That's why the scene of Hip hop, and the original+2nd generation dancers and b-boys and rappers was birthed from the Bronx. . And why they all acknowledge Herc.

Melle Mel and Caz, 2 of the first 3 kings have gotten at Coke over the years. Saying that what he was doing wasn't rapping. So that's why Coke is talking a little greasy.

While Scorpio made sure to reiterate he wasn’t speaking out with any malice, he did admit he was further bothered by Coke La Rock being credited as Hip Hop’s first MC, which he said is actually his fellow Furious Five brethren Melle Mel.

“The other day, they set up something with the New York City mayor and gave a proclamation to Coke La Rock being coined the first MC,” he said. “Now, that is such disrespect because everybody know that Melle Mel was the first one that even call himself the MC, but we used to spell it different. We used to spell it ‘e-m-c-e-e.’ And then when everybody came after us, they started just putting MC. Coke wasn’t even known for MC. You can’t even find a Kool Herc flyer where it said MC Coke La Rock.

“It’s just real sad because we had the most impact. And this is not arrogance. I got to keep saying that because everybody should be proud of what they brought to the table. If you came out two years after us and you still part of the culture, you should be proud of that. [ ], if you part of the culture and you still able to eat off of the culture, then you should be proud of that, but you don’t go back and try to rewrite history.”

The first real rapper (syncopated to the beat) in the HipHop style context (2 turntables and a mixer) was Dj Hollywood.

The first MC in the West Bronx/Herc scene was Coke La Roc (freelanced talking with no syncopation). Melle Mel and Kid Creole who are from/partied in the West Bronx used to see and hear Coke La Rock say slick stuff on the mic ("ya rock and ya don't stop" phrase came from Coke La Rock). Melle Mel, Kid Creole and Cowboy jacked phrases like that from Coke but then heard Dj Hollywood! He was flowing in the style we know today as "Rapping" (syncopated) and he was saying stuff like "Throw ya hands in the air, wave em like you just don't care!" Some clips explaining all of this:

Rahiem on video, confirming that "rapping" (rapping is syncopation on/to a beat) DID NOT come from the Herc scene. He says Coke La Rock was doing unsyncopated/free lanced slick talk on the mic in the "Toast" style of likes of the Last Poets and that's how Melle Mel first sounded. He says after Flash took Melle Mel/Cowboy/Kid Creole to Club 371 (this was the stomping grounds for Dj Hollywood and Eddie Cheeba, both of these guys were part of Pete Dj Jones' circle. He's the same one who taught Disco djing foundations to Flash, that would lead to the HipHop quick mix style) they saw/heard Dj Hollywood and then they switched their style up to the syncopated style, that we now know today as "Rapping"

Grandmixer DST flat out says that style we now known as "rapping" today, came from Dj Hollywood. He says no one in the Herc scene was flowing on beat with verses until they heard Hollywood

Caz says Hollywood is/was the blueprint that he/melle mel (what would become the modern rapper) followed

Part 2

"The stuff I was doing on the mic had no connection to Jamaican culture; I didn't even know Herc was Jamaican until after 2 years of knowing him"

DJ Hollywood had a really bad drug habit that prevented him from reaching the mainstream audience. His style has gotten sharked RECKLESSLY because of it. He is an OG of rap and also an OG of fumbling the bag. He was harmonizing & rapping on tracks back in the early 80's.

I can't find the interview right now bu before Sylvia Robinson formed Sugar Hill Gang, she wanted to makes records with Hollywood but he was making so much money on the streets from his tapes and the Harlem hustlers, he refused it. And yeah, he then got hooked on drugs which derailed him.

facts! He's basically the father of what they call "melodies" (Drake, Future, Phonte, Young Thug etc...) today, Caz and Nore talk about it here
