Climate Change A Top Global Threat, But Not In America, According To Pew Study

Many around the world see climate change as a major threat, but Americans rank among the least concerned about the issue, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center.

Only 40 percent of Americans surveyed said the warming planet is a "major threat," according to Pew. Similar results were seen in China, Jordan, Egypt and Pakistan, among several others of the 39 countries surveyed.

The top threats to the U.S. include North Korea's nuclear program (according to 59 percent of Americans), Islamic extremist groups (56 percent) and Iran's nuclear program (54 percent).

Yet more than half of all respondents in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa said climate change was a "major threat" to their individual countries. 54 percent of Canadians surveyed also listed climate change as a threat.

An April 2013 Gallup poll showed a majority of Americans acknowledge the reality of climate change. But public opinion can be fickle, with fewer Americans acknowledging climate change after a cold winter.

U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to unveil a set of actions designed to address climate change on Tuesday. "This is a serious challenge, but it's one uniquely suited to America's strengths," Obama said in a recent YouTube video.

Pew's results come from a survey of 37,653 individuals in 39 countries over the course of two months.

Looks like the majority of the people in the U.S. still don't believe this is a serious issue. So my question is for those on here who agree...why do you feel that this isn't a serious issue, and what would it take for you to change your mind?

Is Climate Change some sort of left-wing conspiracy? If so, who started the conspiracy, who benefits from it, and who is in on it? Are most of the world's climatologists part of it? :ld:

Do you have religious reasons for not believing this is an issue? For example, a belief that Jesus will return in the near future anyway so there's no need to preserve the environment?

Why do you think the rest of the world views this as more of a threat than your average American? Is it due to divisive politics and climate change being associated with one political party? :ld:

Inquiring minds want to know. :ld:

I'm sure at @NZA is feeling the increased heat...

But :smh: @ palm springs being 117f...

East coast is pretty chill right now...but I'm done pretending that I'm sort sort of environmental expert that can argue for either side with authority since i haven't read anything on climate change in quite some time

That being said as long as it doesn't become illegal to have a v8 in my mustang and be able to supercharge it I'm good

So far all the car companies have done a wonderful job meeting their EPA mandates and still provide options for hp enthusiasts...like ford and their Ecoboost

Ecoboost is probably never invented without the push for greening of tech...I mean tesla is able to get 450hp with a battery powered engine

it's been around 117f for a couple days here. it's always been hot in the summer, so it's hard for me to link it to global warming. i have lived through 120f with broken AC and a huge west-facing bedroom window years ago. im a triple digit temperature veteran now. as long as i have working AC and an inside job, im cool. it seems to be within the realm of normal for people living in the sonoran desert.

other parts of the world that are getting lots of flooding, or places where glaciers melt when they otherwise wouldnt are probably more indicative of something.

when glaciers melt the sea level rises and less sun light gets reflected away from the Earth and absorbed by the water thereby warming it.

warmer water means stronger hurricanes/tsunamis.
add that to higher sea levels and you can see how Hurricane Sandy slapped NYC's/NY's kuffi off.

people are going to look back on this part of history and be like :whoo: :sconi: :ohhh::what::dwillhuh::snoop:

Yep. History will look at our generation as the one that fukked up the climate. :snoop:

Well, really, the generation before (most of) us since people under 40 don't have much political power.

off topic, you ever watch the 1950s 'the blob' movie? no weapon could stop the blob, it kept growing bigger and stronger, but then they discover that cold temperatures cause it to stop moving. they freeze it with some fire extinguishers and then airlift it to the arctic where they joke about the world being safe from the blob as long as the arctic stays cold, then the movie says 'the end?', with a question mark like they know even the arctic will get warmer in the future :wow:

Why do people always bring up local weather trends when the topic of global warming comes up?

It doesn't matter if it it unseasonably warm or cool where you live the average global temperature is rising.

I live in the north east and whenever its cold in the Jan/feb people always have to be like "So much for global warming! Am I right?" :snoop:
