alphadogg writes "Cisco today kicked off a contest with $300,000 in prize money that challenges security experts around the world to put together ways to secure what's now called the 'Internet of Things,' the wide range of non-traditional computing devices used on the electric grid, in healthcare and many other industries. A Cisco SVP concluded his keynote at this week's RSA Conference by announcing what he called the 'Internet of Things Security Grand Challenge.' Christopher Young said the idea is 'a contest of experts around the world to submit blueprints' for how security issues created by the Internet of Things could be addressed. It's expected that up to six winning entries would be selected and the prize money awarded at the Internet of Things Forum in the fall."

Until you can make more money plugging security holes than exploiting them this is pointless.

Pay them 300,000 to do Cisco's job who will then make billions from it, sounds like a great idea

true...but don't ignore the ego-factor. i'd bet that would motivate some of the really great players in the field more than the money would.

:heh: I was thinking the exact same thing. If I'm smart enough to figure that out you going to be paying more than 300k:win:

yea but 300k is an extreme lowball from a company like cisco for what they're asking for.I remember a while back a story about some new device that let's you unlock a certain model car which lead to a bunch of car thefts. That's a basic example of what they're asking for. Being able to secure something in the healthcare sector alone is worth billions.

Agreed.
TBH its almost disrespectful and highway robbery for that type of idea/solution imo.
