July video game hardware spending grew 12% when compared to a year ago, to $326 million. Growth in spending on PlayStation 5 (+25% vs YA) and Xbox Series (+48%) hardware was partially offset by a 44% drop in spending on Switch.
771k total units of video game Console hardware (excluding PC Portables) sold in July, up from 695k a year ago.
PlayStation 5 led the month’s hardware market in unit and dollar sales, with Xbox Series ranking 2nd across both measures. July 2024 is the first month with year-on-year growth in video game hardware spending since the 2% increase seen during December 2023.
Software
Launch month dollar sales of EA Sports College Football 25 more than tripled the total lifetime dollar sales of the previous best-selling college football game, NCAA Football 07.
Mobile
Sensor Tower: Top 10 mobile games by U.S. consumer spend in July and rank change vs June: MONOPOLY GO!, Roblox (+1), Royal Match (-1), Candy Crush Saga, Pokémon GO (+5), Last War: Survival (-1), Whiteout Survival (-1), Coin Master (-1), Township, and Brawl Stars (-2).
“For July 2024, we no longer see double digit growth comparing year over year, but we do still see a solid 7.6%,” said Samuel Aune of Sensor Tower. “The winning genres this month were Simulation and Shooters."
"The breakout games for Simulation were Township, Roblox, and Minecraft, which increased US consumer spend 38% month over month. Minecraft continues to be the highest grossing mobile paid game in the world over a decade after its launch," said Aune. Aune continued… "For Shooters, Free Fire Garena, PUBG MOBILE, and GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE all saw 50%+ increases in US consumer spend growth month over month, while Call of Duty: Mobile grew US consumer spend 32% month over month.”
Accessories
Consumer spending on Accessories grew 4% in July when compared to a year ago, to $184M. Leading the year-on-year spending gains for Accessories were the Remote Play Device segment (PlayStation Portal), and Gamepads (+6% versus a year ago).
The PlayStation Portal was the best-selling accessory in dollar sales for both July and 2024 year-to-date. In units, the best-selling accessory of both July and 2024 year-to-date was the PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black.
