In an interview with IGN, Chronicle scribe Max Landis told them that the last draft he sent to Fox was “really dark”. Landis responded to speculation that Fox didn’t like the script by saying, “They liked my script. It’s just a really dark script”.

During the interview, Landis also said:

“The truth is when you have a movie that was as successful as ‘Chronicle’ was, it’s not as quick of a process. There are a lot more voices coming in and saying ‘This is what the sequel should be’ because there’s a bigger expectation and a bigger fear of failure. And that’s really what’s going on with ‘Chronicle 2′.

The first Chronicle film was made on a budget of $12 million and went on to make $126 million worldwide.

Landis continued:

[Helmer] Josh [Trank] is directing Fantastic Four. I’m doing a hundred other movies. ‘Chronicle 2′ has become this question of ‘How do we all make a movie that we all respect?’. And that’s true to what ‘Chronicle’ is. There’s no one at the studio who wants to make a bad movie. They all want to make a good movie just as much as I do. We’re not fighting.

Landis emphasizes that everyone wants the best possible product. The writer is optimistic that the film will happen and he ended his interview with IGN by saying that he is “60-75% sure that it will be a pretty damn good movie.”

If anyone wants to know why Hollywood sequel's suck 99.9% of the time....read the statement above.

Landis has a Pops in the game and pretty much grew up in the industry. I bet that statement above isn't a happy one.

I remember Landis was on the Nerdist podcast and basically broke down how you have to get ideas pitched in hollywood and he really broke it down...

I really liked part 1 it'll be interesting to see if they go away from the found footage and make it a big blockbuster with the alien invasion

Looks like Landis was trying to maybe move away from found footage

"He wrote a sequel and it's amazing", John Landis told The Playlist. "But the studio read it and said 'we want Chronicle again'! And he said 'no, this is the sequel, it's the evolution', and they said 'no, we want that movie again!' So it's difficult".

The original flick didn't really need the found footage gimmick. I think it would have been just as good a film without it, maybe even better.
Hopefully they don't go to that well again in the sequel.

Found Footage was (still is) hot at the time in Hollywood. One of the reasons is that it brings audiences into the movies....the other is t's cheaper to shoot.

But from what I understand this movie was shot on RED anyway with a full crew and the camcorder effect/look was added in post. So maybe you're right, it could have done without.
