Last year, music executive Chris Lighty committed suicide at his New York home. According to the New York Post, the 44-year-old shot and killed himself, after an argument with his wife, Veronica. Almost a year later, Chris’ family still have unanswered questions about his death and do not believe he committed suicide. According to All Hip Hop, recently, his mother, penned a letter and petition, asking for the public’s assistance. She wrote:

Since my son’s death last August, my family and I have been searching for answers to what really happened to my son and to date, none of the explanations given make sense. Our investigation has been stalled. Dr. Baden who was retained to do an independent autopsy has been unable to complete his task due to the lack of cooperation from the Medical Examiner’s office. He was brought in to help determine if Darrell’s death was homicide or suicide. It is almost a year later and we still don’t have the answer. Today, I am begging, Mr. Johnson, the Bronx District Attorney,to make my son’s death a priority and work with our investigator to really look into the facts and circumstances leading up to his untimely death. We have uncovered real information that needs to be followed up on by those in authority. I am attaching a link to an online petition that we will forward to the DA’s office asking them to start a formal investigation. I am asking everyone interested in justice to please sign it

Thank you. I implore the public as well as those who knew my son in the industry to please help us get justice for Chris Lighty. For additional information please contact Mr. Leemon at scott@leemonlaw.com

The online petition reads:

On August 30, 2012 Darrell “Chris” Lighty was killed. Within 24 hours it was declared a suicide and the case was closed. DNA and gun testing to date are but two of many items that should be done to confirm the manner of death. Dr. Baden, who has been retained to perform a second autopsy has been hampered in his efforts as the evidence requested from the Bronx DA’s office has not after nine months been given to him so that the autopsy can be done. What really happened to Chris? Will his children and family get justice? We implore the public for their support and those in his industry to speak out so that the questions that remain unanswered can be resolved. We implore the Bronx DA’s office to officially reopen this case so that it can be investigated. If it were your loved one who died would you not want answers? So does the Lighty Family. Please help us.

Chris Lighty's family and friends are still reeling over his death, which was ruled a suicide. In fact, many of those closest to the music magnate don't believe that he committed suicide at all and are calling for authorities to re-open the case.
Fat Joe Believes Chris Lighty's Suicide Ruling Despite Swirling Questions
After attorney Scott Leemon calls out NYPD investigation, Fat Joe tells 'RapFix Live' he doesn't suspect foul play

"See, none of us want to think that our friends or somebody that we love will commit suicide. We don't know what happened at that moment," Fat Joe argued reluctantly when he appeared on "RapFix Live" on Wednesday.

Last August, Lighty was found dead in his Bronx, New York, home. Medical examiners officially ruled that his death was a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Many like Chris' brother Dave and star rapper 50 Cent have stated publicly that they don't believe Lighty killed himself. In September, attorney Scott Leemon, who has defended rappers like Jim Jones and Busta Rhymes in high-profile criminal cases, launched his own private investigation to examine the circumstances surrounding Lighty's death. He now says he has turned up evidence which raises questions about the suicide.

"The main problem that we encountered was that the NYPD did not do a thorough investigation into Chris' death," Leemon said in a statement issued to XXLMag.com on Tuesday. "In fact, what they did do was cursory, at best."

Joe credits Lighty with changing the course of his life and giving the one-time drug dealer a chance at rap, so his love for the mogul is unwavering. But the Terror Squad leader believes that the NYPD wouldn't make such a glaring mistake in the investigation. "I don't want to offend nobody. I think it's 2013. I think, a guy so important like that, they weren't going to overlook if he committed suicide," he said.

"What kind of a lawsuit would that be for a guy as rich as Chris Lighty who did so much? What kind of lawsuit would that be for the NYPD," Joe questioned. "I don't think they're going to fumble the ball on that."
