Pacquiao Fight in Doubt, Algieri Wants More Money
Posted by: James Howlett on 7/14/2014 .

The Long Island boxer Chris Algieri is officially on the clock.

For the past week, Huntington’s Algieri has methodically reflected over a seven-figure offer to face Manny Pacquiao in November. But if the highly educated Algieri spends another 24 hours pondering over the bout, he may find that the opportunity of a lifetime was just that: a chance that never reached its fitful conclusion. According to his promoter, Joe DeGuardia, Algieri may lose the fight offer from Top Rank's Bob Arum if he doesn’t respond by Monday.

"I'm just very surprised and disappointed by what's going on," DeGuardia said. "I know what a deal is worth and this is a good deal. I think he's getting advice from people who aren't in the business and they're not giving him good advice. This deal is a no-brainer. I have to think he's going to come to his senses eventually."

Algieri is reportedly frustrated with an offer that's believed to be in the $1.5 million sphere plus a percentage of the PPV sales to face Pacquiao, according to Newsday
, which reached Algieri at a public appearance Saturday at a sporting goods store in Huntington Station.

"If we're going to make this fight happen, I value myself and my health very highly," Algieri told Newsday. "I just want what I deserve."

DeGuardia fully expects to reach Algieri on Monday on whether to go forward with the bout, which will take place on Nov. 22 in Macau China on HBO pay-per-view for Pacquiao's WBO welterweight title. DeGuardia believes the offer is fair. Algieri made a career-high $100,000 in his title wining performance against Ruslan Provodnikov last month, capturing the WBO junior welterweight belt after he was decked twice and his right eye was shut for the final rounds of the bout.

Even if Algieri were to lose to Pacquiao, he would still get to keep his 140-pound title, DeGuardia said. The only issues that Algieri's camp chirped about early on was drug testing and tax consequences in China, DeGuardia said. But those issues have since been worked out, the promoter said and VADA is handling drug testing.

"It's the opportunity of a lifetime," DeGuardia said. "I need to know his answer. It's been a week. No one has told me anything about needing more money. Hopefully he comes to his senses but if I don't hear anything [by Monday] we'll likely lose the offer.

This dude being offered 1.5 million AND PPV shares......plus if he loses, he gets to KEEP the 140 belt ( @Black_Jesus  I thought Pacquiao was fighting him for the belt....there's NO reason for Pac to fight him if it aint for a Championship:leostare:), and he wants to say "I value myself and my health very highly":wow:
nikka, you receiving a 1400% pay increase for this fight.....you would have to fight Russian Ramon for your career high of 100K, 14 MORE times to equal what you are being offered against Manny Pacquiao:rudy:
In the words of @patscorpio, I cant wait to see Manny Pacquiao toss your equilibrium in the bushes:pacspit:

i understand boxing is prizefighting and the objective is for a fighter to get as much money as he can during his career...but the one thing that irritates me is when a fighter actually says this out loud as parrots this as his main objective..this should be a silent understanding...i like fighters to act like fighters...i want them to talk about them facing good competition and calling out opponents, or how badly they want to whoop somebody ass, or how hard they are training, etc etc..boxing is a hurt game....everyone gets hurt so i dont want to hear shyt about preserving health...i give algieri mad props for surviving a brutal first round and outboxing a dangerous slugger with only 1 eye to become champion...but he's not in any position to be demanding anything from anybody...esp manny pacquiao...dude is the weakest of the 140 champs..i even rate the interims and the "regular" 140 champs over him...i dont even want to see the fight in the first place because algieri hasnt put in any work...pure cash out plain and simple...dude needs to defend his belt that he has and act like a champion

I'm waiting until I hear Algeri speak on it...........
i mean algieri has been on that medical school wave ever since they stuck a microphone in his face...he's an educated guy that doesn't need boxing...if he actually takes this fight and 3 million or so he'll prolly get...dude prolly wont fight again unless there's an opportunity to make a whole lot more (i.e. he actually beats manny)

Here ya go....from his own mouth in his local newspaper:

Chris Algieri looks to land upper cut in pay for fight with Manny Pacquiao

The toughest thing for anyone who hits the lottery is deciding how to handle the money and who to trust. That's where Chris Algieri finds himself following his upset of Ruslan Provodnikov for the WBO light welterweight title.

That victory thrust him into position for the chance of a lifetime for a pay-per-view fight against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

Industry sources indicate Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) has an offer in the vicinity of $1.5 million plus an upside if PPV sales are strong, but after taking short money of just $100,000 for Provodnikov, the 30-year-old Huntington native doesn't want to sell himself short for a shot at Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs), who is one of the two biggest drawing cards in boxing, along with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"I took a calculated risk with the Ruslan fight and took short money because of that reason," Algieri said Saturday at an appearance at a sporting goods store in Huntington Station. "I was really unknown at that point. I'm not an unknown anymore.

"If we're going to make this fight happen, I value myself and my health very highly and what I've been doing for the past 20 years. I just want what I deserve."

Looking at Pacquiao's last three opponents, Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez each received $6 million and Brandon Rios got $4 million. All were much better known than Algieri and had fought multiple times on HBO. Algieri's promoter, Joe DeGuardia, suggested Joshua Clottey, who received $1.5 million in 2010, might be an apt comparison.

Algieri disagrees.

"With Josh Clottey, he wasn't an undefeated world champion. I am," Algieri noted. "I've got two things that are very important -- that [WBO championship] belt and a zero at the end of my record."

Does Algieri believe he's worth more than Clottey? "Yeah, I do," Algieri said.

To borrow a phrase from soccer, negotiations for a potential Pacquiao-Algieri fight have gone into extra time. Top Rank Promotions, which handles Pacquiao, has about a week left in which to complete a deal for the Nov. 22 date at the Venetian Casino in Macau, China. If Algieri doesn't reach an agreement in the next couple of days, it's possible Top Rank will move on to a different opponent, possibly even Provodnikov.

Asked if he's worried about overplaying his hand, Algieri said: "Of course. There's always a chance to lose opportunities. I had the Ruslan opportunity, and it worked out. But you've got to make the right moves. That turned out to be the right move. A lot of people thought it was a bad move. Until that night."

Algieri was knocked down twice in the first round, suffering a broken nose and a bruise under his right eye that swelled hideously and closed that eye by the final three rounds. But he boxed his way to a split decision win and since has recovered so well that he recently was cleared to resume training, though he will postpone contact until serious fight preparations begin.

Even if he fights Pacquiao, Algieri will retain his 140-pound title, but his options at that weight in terms of purse money pale in comparison to a Pacquiao fight. As DeGuardia recently said, being part of a Pacquiao promotion would take Algieri's name recognition to a new level. Algieri represents a different kind of story angle for HBO as a boy-next-door type from the suburbs of Long Island with a bachelor's degree from Stony Brook and a masters from NYIT in nutrition.

So there's a lot to think about as Algieri talks to his team of attorney Eric Melzer and longtime trainers Tim Lane and Keith Trimble and weighs the pros and cons of his one shot at the brass ring. "I'm sure they want to get it done as soon as possible," Algieri said of the promoters. "I think we all do. It's going to be all squared away fairly shortly. One way or the other, it's going to be figured out very soon."

This dude thinks TOO highly of himself. He believes he's worth more money than Clottey was because he's "undefeated" and has "a zero at the end of my record"?:mindblown:

I guess he playing hardball since manny doesn't have any good opponents left:manny:

This is true.

Manny shouldnt even be fighting him since it's not even for a belt:snoop:

If it's gonna be a HBO or TR fighter, no belt on the line, and at 140, the boxing fan prefers to see Manny Pacquiao vs Ruslan Provodnikov not Manny Pacquiao vs Chris Algieri.

This is an embarrassing fight for Pacquiao:wow:

Pacquiao is gonna destroy this guy....and he knows it. That's why he's trying to cash out:heh:

He's on borrowed time, and if Provodnikov had as much footspeed and handspeed as Manny does, we wouldnt even be discussing Algieri right now:yeshrug:
