Chinese state media warns Adam Silver could face 'retribution'

BA players and teams have left China, but the back-and-forth between the two sides has not stopped. On Saturday, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV issued a warning to commissioner Adam Silver.

Yahoo is now part of Verizon Media

He added: “There’s no chance we’ll even discipline him.”

But Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang
said on Friday that Beijing had never made such a demand.

CCTV said Silver had crossed a line.

“Silver has spared no effort to portray himself as a fighter for free speech and used freedom of speech as an excuse to cover for Morey, who voiced his support for the violent actors in Hong Kong,” it said. “This has crossed the bottom line of the Chinese people.”

Silver’s handling of the controversy had proved his “double standards”, the broadcaster said, adding that he had “defamed” China on the international stage.

“To please some American politicians, Silver has fabricated lies out of nothing and has sought to paint China as unforgiving,” it said.

The way in which the NBA
boss had defended Morey showed he had “problems in his character”, the report said, adding that he “will receive retribution sooner or later”.

Silver is now clear on NBA’s position
Silver has clarified the NBA’s position in recent public statements after his initial comments ignited criticism in the United States. The league’s first statement called Morey’s tweet “inappropriate” and said the NBA was “extremely disappointed.”

Despite admitting that the financial losses as a result of Morey’s comments have already been “substantial” and “may continue to be fairly dramatic,” Silver said that he is willing to deal with the consequences and protect Morey’s freedom of expression.

Silver has spared no effort to portray himself as a fighter for free speech and used freedom of speech as an excuse to cover for Morey, who voiced his support for the violent actors in Hong Kong. This has crossed the bottom line of the Chinese people.

Tension is far from over

Man arrested over 'Lennon Tunnel' knife attack - RTHK

Police said on Saturday evening that they had arrested a 22-year-old man after a teenager was stabbed as he was handing out leaflets in Tai Po's "Lennon Tunnel".

Dude’s guts were literally next to him on the pavement for handing out some pamphlets :skip:

So if China never made that demand, why cats still pushin this narrative?
They probably did.

They are just lying.

They forced numerous companies to fire their employees for supporting Hong Kong, Tibet, Taiwan, etc

Most of the times Americans don’t notice, however, they fukked up this time because the NBA is in the news cycle and trending on twitter every day

That is why they are backtracking.

For such a large country they had no idea how much damage one tweet could make

all they had to do was ignore it

Nobody really cares about execs, it’s much different with celebs, they assumed they could keep this quiet. I seriously hope they have learned because this will happen again

For all y'all CPC sockpuppet shills who were so "curious" as to why Silver wouldn't fire Morey despite all the hot press that's ensued in the wake of that tweet.... this is why. It's always been about far far more than just some exhibition preseason game tickets. Stay in your centralist lane and keep your dystopian control and suppression campaign to yourselves in your own borders...:camby::umad:

So if China never made that demand, why cats still pushin this narrative?

Because they very likely did make that demand. They wanted Morey fired. Even if they didn’t blatantly say that, I’m sure they made it clear that’s the outcome they wanted.

Their reaction to the initial tweet drew way more attention and scrutiny from the average American and American politicians than it otherwise would’ve gotten. So blatantly admitting they want him fired would just prove their critics correct. Hence the statement from the foreign ministry trying to downplay it.

But trust that that’s what they wanted to happen.
