A DAD has been blasted to death in a gun and grenade execution just weeks after his son was killed in a blood feud over a woman.
A manhunt was launched yesterday when a gunman shot David Short, 46, nine times with a 9mm pistol after blowing off his front door with explosives.
Minutes later there was an almost identical attack when a nearby house was peppered with bullets and a grenade detonated outside but no one was hurt.
The murder in Clayton, *Manchester, on Friday morning came just weeks after David Shorts amateur boxer son Mark, 23, was shot dead as he drank in a pub with friends.
Last night, armed police were patrolling the area as detectives searched for one-eyed Dale *Cregan, 29 wanted for questioning over both murders.
The Daily Star Sunday can reveal the shootings happened after a row over a woman *re-ignited a long-running feud involving two rival families.
The Shorts well known in Clayton and neighbouring Droylsden had been at war with another notorious family when a truce was called earlier this year.
But the peace was broken after a dispute sparked by a pretty young woman.
She was attracted to a lad drinking in a pub with the Short family but her advances were *rejected in a boozy night out *earlier this year.
An argument broke out and she went to hit the lad with a bottle but he then physically attacked her.
The girl complained to the rival family who we cannot name for legal reasons weeks before the first shooting, underworld *sources said.
Convicted villain Mark Short was drinking with pals at the Cotton Tree Inn in Droylsden in May when a masked gunman burst in to a 60th birthday party and opened fire.
Three other men were also shot by the balaclava-clad hitman.
Two men were charged over Mark Shorts murder but the prime suspect is dad-of-one *Cregan, an associate of the *family at war with the Shorts.Last night a senior police source said Cregan had been on the run since the May shooting.
And he said the Shorts had been planning a revenge attack on the killer and members of the rival family.
He told the Daily Star Sunday: David Short wanted to exact revenge over the murder of his son, not only on the killer but also associates and members of the rival family.
We believe the suspected *killer has then thought Well Im not going to wait for that to happen and it looks as though hes taken a pre-emptive strike.
David Short was thought to be with his partner in the house when he was executed.
The gunman fled with a *getaway driver and possibly another man in a van before dumping it and switching to a silver Ford Fiesta.Now Greater Manchester Police murder squad detectives see him as their prime suspect.
Ports and airports were put on alert last night as detectives feared Cregan may try to flee the country.
Mark Short was a close pal of the infamous Joyce family who waged war on telly gypsy and Celeb Big Brother winner Paddy Doherty, 53.
He was good friends with *Johnny Joyce, 21, jailed earlier this year for biting off part of his cousin Dohertys ear in a bare-knuckle brawl.
Assistant Chief Constable *Garry Shewan appealed to the public to help trace Cregan and offered his condolences to the Short family.
He said: It is important that anyone who sees Dale Cregan does not approach him but *contacts GMP immediately.
Our thoughts remain with the family of David Short, who are understandably distraught after his death.
Clearly this is the second *tragedy this family has had to face in recent months and *specialist officers are supporting them as best they can.
These two extreme acts of *violence are highly unusual for the Greater Manchester area and are not something we will *tolerate.
