As far as the first link with the economic and population issues, that may be true, but as far as the violence 
I actually lived in Chicago in the heart of the Southside, went to high school there and everything. It's not THAT bad. I know nikkas is getting whacked left and right, but this board makes it seem as the Chi is the most dangerous place in the world. As long as you mind your business, Chicago is about as safe as any other city

This isn't true. You usually live here by a neighborhood system. Stay away from this area, don't go there. Everybody gets got, involved or not, cuz knuckleheads these days are trying to build street cred.

But I do hate how people look to jump on cities going through tough times to shyt on em (not saying TWISM is)
And then how other people use those tough times to tout their own street cred ("i was in harlem in 88 nikka im for real")
shyt is bad and needs to get fixed

It is that bad, it's just that you have become desensitized to the violence, "minding your own business" is not an acceptable way to live, it's simply you have gotten use to those rules
It's also not true that if you mind your own business you'll be ok. I lived in Chi last year (in the south side, too,) and random people were getting killed in the crossfire of gang violence. It's true that gangs were the main cause, and that they primarily targeted each other, but the collateral damage wasn't insignificant, and kids were getting robbed and beaten left and right, too. Within a 1 block radius of my building alone, there was at least one incident every few weeks. It was definitely worse than most other places.
