I'm not sure you know how animals work

They can hear, see, and feel you breathing. They can smell your sweat and your fear. They will try you, its what they do. Whether playfully or not. Your best bet was to let your mind go blank, show no fear, no sudden reactions, and wait for him to bounce... Which it looked like they did.
