When the Cartoon Network shelved Speedy Gonzales cartoons for being offensive to the Hispanic community, they got a very unexpected response
In 1999, Cartoon Network decided that the animated character, Speedy Gonzales, was depicting an offensive Mexican stereotype and shelved all films he appeared in when they got the exclusive rights to broadcast them during that year.
Despite their opinion about the hyperactive little fellow, the Hispanic-American rights organization League of United Latin American Citizens, called Speedy a "cultural icon." Thousands of messages of support for Speedy was registered on the hispaniconline.com message boards. Due to fan campaigns like those, Cartoon Network had to air the animated shorts of Speedy Gonzales and he returned in 2002.
Even though it is quite clear that the Hispanic community is in no way offended by the character, the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD box sets carry a disclaimer before the Speedy cartoons that reads: "The cartoons you are about to see are products of their time. They may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American society. These depictions were false then and are still false today."
Sometimes it helps to ask the people you think are offended whether they actually are offended, but it seems Cartoon Network is convinced someday, somebody should be.
