Captain America: Civil War, which opened this week in the U.S. and last week in a number of foreign markets, has already cracked the top five highest-grossing films of the year with a $678 global box office haul.
The film, based loosely on the controversial comic book miniseries by Kick-Ass and Kingsman creator Mark Millar, earned more than $180 million this weekend in North America for the year's biggest opening, and helped push Disney as a whole past the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office so far in 2016.
By this time next week, the movie has an outside chance of catching up to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which has earned about $865 million worldwide, but with almost $200 million to make and a foreign market that's in its third weekend, that might be a big ask for one week. It's very likely, however, that the movie will surpass Deadpool and The Jungle Bookat the worldwide box office, as each of those is between $80 million and $100 million above Civil War...and the movie will likely drop by about 50% at the domestic box office and earn between $75 and $90 million next weekend in North America alone.
With Zootopia ($956 million) wrapping up its theatrical run to prepare for a Blu-ray release in early June, it's likely that barring a steep dropoff Civil War could become the year's first billion-dollar blockbuster.
