CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — A Springfield man was arrested Tuesday after a duress alarm at a local bank branch, the City of Cape Girardeau Police Department released Thursday.
According to a news release from the department, officers responded around 12:06 p.m. to the Southern Bank at 380 North Kingshighway. They found Richard Bann, 72, of Springfield, sitting on a walker by the front door. Bann reportedly told the officer that he was expecting him, that he had just robbed the bank, and gave the officer an envelope that contained a $20 bill. Bann told the officer that he wanted to go to prison so he could receive medical attention, the department said.
Witnesses inside the bank told officers that Bann had come in and announced he was robbing the bank, and told the witness to put money in an envelope, but he reportedly did not specify how much. The witness put the $20 into the envelope and handed it to Bann. Bann then left the bank and waited outside for officers to arrive.
The release said Bann did not display any weapons, and officers did not find any weapons.
The Cape Girardeau County Prosecutors Office formally charged Bann with stealing, a class B felony. He is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.
The department reminded the public that a charge is an accusation, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
