Canned Tuna recalled: Bumble Bee and Chicken of the Sea

major brands are recalling cans of tuna sold nationwide because an issue with the sterilization process means the fish could spoil or become contaminated with pathogens, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

On Wednesday, Bumble Bee Foods LLC recalled 31,579 cases of canned Chunk Light tuna, while on Thursday, Tri-Union Seafoods LLC recalled 2,745 cases, or 107,280 cans, of Chicken of the Sea brand chunk light tuna in oil and water due to the issue with the canning process.

According to press releases issued for both recalls, a problem occurred during the sterilization process, and anyone consuming the improperly packed tuna could develop life-threatening illness; though no illnesses have yet to be reported by anyone who consumed the recalled items.

Bumble Bee is recalling cans produced in February 2016 and distributed nationwide. The recalled products subject bear a can code that starts with a "T" (example: TOA2BSCAFB) and have the following "best by" dates:

Tri-Union Seafoods is recalling the following products:

Chicken of the Sea 5 Oz. Canned Chunk Light Tuna in Oil sold at retailers nationwide in single cans between Feb. 10, 2016 and March 16, 2016.

The UPC code is 0 4800000195 5 and the Best By date is 2/10/19.

The UPC code (also known as the bar code) is found on the label of the product. The Best By date can be found on the bottom of the can. The product lot codes can also be found on the bottom of the can.

The following lot codes and Best-By dates on Chicken of the Sea are affected:
