Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is not moving up to the middleweight division any time soon, according to his manager Jose "Chepo" Reynoso.
Canelo has fought his last three bouts at 155-pounds, one pound above the junior middleweight limit. His manager denies that his fighter is requesting a weight limit of 155 because there are issues with getting down to junior middleweight. Canelo faced Erislandy Lara, Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland at 155.
Canelo next fight is likely going to come against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, who defends his belt for the first time on Saturday night against Daniel Geale in New York City.
Although Cotto is beltholder at middleweight, the Puerto Rican fighter has never fought at the full division limit of 160-pounds. He captured the belt last year from Sergio Martinez at a catch-weight of 159-pounds and the upcoming defense against Geale is contracted for 157.
"The truth is he had no problems [making weight for his last fight]. He made 154.5 pounds [at the official weighin] against Kirkland, and the limit was 155 pounds. The weight was made the day before, and the next day he did nothing but rest. He had no trouble [making weight] despite having 10 months of inactivity. We are not considering going up to middleweight. When his body starts asking him [to move up due to weight issues], we'll consider it," Chepo told ESPN Deportes.
