Warren Confirms Offer For Liam Smith To Face Canelo
By Elliot Foster
Liam Smith could defend his world title against Mexican superstar Saul Alvarez.
The Liverpool super welterweight, who holds the division’s WBO crown, is currently resting ahead of a potential May ring return.
Smith (22-0-1, 12 KOs), 27, made a successful start to his reign as world champion at the end of last year, stopping voluntary challenger Jimmy Kelly (16-1, 7 KOs) inside seven rounds at Manchester Arena on December 19, live and exclusive on BoxNation.
And now that he has taken to the role of world champion like a duck to water, it’s only a matter of time before the big names come calling in a bid to snatch the global glory away from the likeable Scouser.
His promoter Frank Warren, of Queensberry Promotions, has confirmed that an offer has been received from 25-year-old ‘Canelo’ (46-1-1, 32 KOs) –– who recently captured the WBC middleweight title with a points victory over Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas –– to challenge ‘Beefy’ for the belt at some point over the course of the next 12 months.
“We’re contemplating an offer from Alvarez,” Warren admitted during an interview with BoxNation’s Kugan Cassius on iFL TV. “We’re looking at that, we’ll think about it and see where we go. We’ll see [what happens with the offer, whether it’s taken or not].
“I’m not going to get in too much detail – It’s a big fight for Liam and there’s other big fights out there for him, so we’ve got quite a few things that we’re looking at at the moment.”
Alvarez, it has been confirmed, will box on the most coveted Mexican Bank Holiday dates in May and September this year.
He is set to headline the first sporting event at the new Las Vegas arena, which will be known as the T-Mobile Arena, on May 7 as part of a HBO-televised promotion on which he’ll make the first defence of his aforementioned WBC crown.
Further news regarding Smith and when he will return to the ring is set to be revealed in due course.
