Carney urges Canadian doctors in the U.S. to come home

Liberal Leader Mark Carney is making a direct appeal to Canadian doctors and nurses living in the U.S. to “come home.”

Carney made the comments Monday while talking up his health-care plan, which looks to add thousands of new physicians to the system.

He said his government would streamline credential recognition and look to poach global talent, including doctors working in the U.S.

“To the Canadian health-care professionals practising in the U.S., let me say this. If you’ve been thinking about coming back to Canada, there’s never been a better time,” Carney told a morning press conference at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown.

“It’s time to come home.”

Carney rolled out a health-care plan that includes $4 billion for building and renovating hospitals and long-term care homes.

“Hospitals and clinics have been closing, while the needs in the health-care system are growing. We must reverse this trend and increase access to team-based care,” he said.

Carney, who started the last week of the election campaign on the East Coast, was introduced at an event Monday by incumbent MP Sean Casey, who called Carney the “adult in the room” in Canadian politics.

The Liberal leader also took a moment to react to the death of Pope Francis. Carney called him a “voice of moral clarity” with “boundless compassion.”

Carney arrived in Prince Edward Island on Sunday and greeted supporters and local MPs at the Charlottetown airport.

Liberal MPs currently hold all four seats in P. E. I, with three of those incumbents running for re-election.

Former agriculture minister Lawrence MacAulay, who was first elected as MP for the riding of Cardigan in 1997, is not running again.

The Liberal party currently holds 23 of 32 seats in Atlantic Canada.

While the Liberals swept the region entirely in 2015, they have since lost some of those seats to the Conservatives.

Within Canada, health care is primarily a provincial responsibility.

However, the federal government has several roles to fulfill regarding health care, most prominently through the Canada Health Transfer.

This is an excerpt from the Liberal media release outlining their platform on Health Care:

Add thousands of new doctors to Canada’s health care system, increase medical school spaces and build new medical schools, expand residency positions, recruit qualified doctors through a new global recruitment strategy and streamline credential recognition for internationally trained doctors and nurses;
Build hospitals, clinics, and more, by investing $4 billion to construct and renovate community health care infrastructure including long-term care homes, and community clinics, and increase access to team-based care, mental health care services, and expensive machinery such as MRIs;
Modernize Canada’s public healthcare system, including cutting wait times in half for life-saving medications, launching a Task Force for Public Health Care Innovation, implementing a national license for physicians and nurses, reducing the administrative burden on doctors, and securing Canadians’ access to their health care data;
Improve mental health care and support to address the overdose crisis, including with an immediate $500 million investment in the Emergency Treatment Fund to confront the toxic drug and overdose crisis; and,
Invest in women’s health, including ensuring there will always be funding for abortion care in Canada by making the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund Program permanent and introducing a new in vitro fertilization (IVF) program to make it more affordable for Canadians who want to become parents.
Protect reproductive rights, by always standing up for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“In America, health care is big business – but in Canada, it is a right,” said Mark Carney, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. “Canada will never be America. We must protect and build the institutions that make us strong. My new government will invest in our public health care system to add thousands of new doctors, build new hospitals, and deliver better mental health services. We will build a stronger Canadian health care system.”

They WOULDN'T listen. It was none of our business. They could take care of it themselves. Yet they didn't. Obviously voting for Harris was not enough.

But hindsight is 20/20 🤷🏽‍♀️

It basically came down to the right wing in our country scaring people about not only a WOMAN but a BLACK woman. It is insane.

There was another faction working behind the scenes as well

They usually had a water melon emoji & had/owned the hearts of those who would have voted & voted for a Democrat

Black women were made aware before the election & separated themselves from that faction but no one else was paying attention

Poilievre is not a serious politician. You can learn on the job to be a politician, but Carney’s experience includes a PhD & vast experience. Harper & his Finance Minister applauded Carney’s guidance through the 2008 global economic crisis in 🇨🇦. Poilievre has zero experience by comparison.

You don’t have to be a leftist to hate Jordan Peterson. You just need to be a fully formed adult to see that he’s used his talents to become a manipulative grifter and to that end promote the kind of environment that shows him to be as such.

western conservatives have no real plan for dealing with the housing crisis, privatization and tax cuts is their solution to everything. I don't think there'd be as much complaints about immigrants if canadians weren't competing with them for housing. the canadian dollar is in the toilet probably because your economy isn't diversified enough due to the large monopolies you guys allow, talent can't emerge as much without competition.

Here's a breakdown of the Conservative Party of Canada's planned policies to address the listed issues, based on their 2025 platform:

Housing Crisis

GST Elimination: Remove federal sales tax on new homes under $1.3 million, saving buyers up to $100,000 per home57.
Municipal Incentives: Reimburse municipalities 50% of development charge reductions, aiming to lower home prices through faster permitting and reduced fees57.
Federal Land Repurposing: Sell 6,000 federal buildings to free land for housing construction5.
Skilled Trades Expansion: Train 350,000 apprentices over five years through expanded union programs and restored $4,000 apprenticeship grants7.

Job Market & Economy

Resource Project Acceleration: Create a "One-Stop-Shop" to approve mines, LNG terminals, and nuclear projects within one year, aiming to revive energy sector jobs57.
Keep Canadians Working Fund: Counteract U.S. tariff impacts by supporting affected industries7.
Reinvestment Tax Cut: Incentivize domestic reinvestment in housing, manufacturing, and technology7.
Port of Churchill Upgrade: Enhance export capacity for Canadian resources7.

Canadian Dollar & Productivity

Energy Sector Revival: Repeal Bill C-69 ("no pipelines law"), lift oil/gas production caps, and fast-track LNG Canada's Phase 2 to boost exports57.
Regulatory Reform: Implement a "Two-for-One Rule" to cut red tape by 25%, verified annually by the Auditor General7.

Immigration Overhaul

Population Growth Caps: Tie immigration levels to housing, healthcare, and job growth rates to prevent system strain89.
Anti-Fraud Measures: Crack down on fake international student admissions and exploitative work permits28.
Century Initiative Rejection: Oppose the population growth plan targeting 100 million Canadians by 2100, calling it "radical" and harmful to wages89.
Values Screening: Increase CSIS/RCMP resources to assess applicants' alignment with Canadian societal norms2.

LMIA/Work Permit Reforms

Closed Permit Elimination: Replace employer-specific work permits with open permits to reduce worker abuse2.
Temporary Resident Reductions: Prioritize economic immigrants over temporary workers/students, with stricter eligibility criteria28.
Birth Tourism Ban: Criminalize "birth tourism" and end citizenship for children born to non-resident parents2.

The platform frames these measures as reversing a "Lost Liberal Decade" of infrastructure neglect and unsustainable immigration89, emphasizing economic nationalism ("Canada First") through resource development and skilled trades expansion79.

Here's the Liberal Party of Canada's planned policies to address the listed issues, based on their 2025 platform:

Housing Crisis

Build Canada Homes (BCH): Create a federal entity to act as a developer, acquiring land and ordering modular/prefabricated housing to construct affordable units at scale 69.
Construction Acceleration: Double annual homebuilding to 500,000 units by cutting municipal development charges by 50% for multi-unit housing and reintroducing the 1970s-era MURB tax incentive to spur rental construction 69.
Zoning Reform: Enforce high-density housing near federally funded transit stations and standardize housing regulations across provinces to reduce bureaucratic delays 69.
Tax Relief: Maintain GST elimination for first-time buyers on homes ≤$1 million and reduce income taxes for middle-class families by 1% on the lowest tax bracket 512.

Job Market & Economy

Housing-Linked Jobs: Generate construction employment through BCH's $2.99B operations and partnerships with private builders 612.
Supply Chain Modernization: Implement a "one economy" approach to improve cross-provincial labor mobility and goods transportation 2.
Stimulus Spending: Allocate $36.8B over four years for housing/affordability measures, including apprenticeship programs tied to infrastructure projects 12.

Canadian Dollar & Productivity

Trade Defense: Counteract U.S. tariff threats through unspecified economic protections mentioned in housing plan documents 6.
Sustainable Development: Prioritize certified wood and low-emission materials in BCH projects to boost green manufacturing 6.

Immigration Reforms

Stabilization Plan: Maintain reduced permanent resident targets at 395,000 for 2025 (0.95% of population) and cap temporary residents at <5% of population by 2027 71013.
Study Permit Restrictions: Limit international student admissions and eliminate PGWP/spousal work permit eligibility for non-priority programs 10.
System Integrity: Expand verification measures for educational institutions to combat diploma mills, though less aggressively than Conservative proposals 10.

LMIA/Work Permit Reforms

Status Quo Maintenance: No explicit plan to end closed permits, despite NDP pressure 11. Focus remains on reducing temporary worker numbers through overall caps10.
Conversion Incentives: Tax breaks for landlords selling buildings to non-profits if proceeds fund new rental housing 6.

The Liberal platform emphasizes housing-as-economy, using construction to drive job growth while maintaining reduced immigration levels until housing capacity improves 61013. Their approach contrasts with Conservative policies by prioritizing public-sector housing development over private-sector incentives.
