Can you guys explain to me exactly how and why the govt makes money off prisoners?

Im watching this documentary about the "war" on drugs and David Simon said something like.

"Instead of looking at it this way, 'lets get all the drug dealers, killers and criminals off the streets' look at it this way. 'Lets remove the bottom 15%, the extra americans we dont need. Lets lock them up, better yet, lets find a way to make money from them while their locked up'

Then some prison guard said some shyt like small towns or whatever are basing their economy off prisons, so they agree to build a prison. But the only way they're gonna get money is buy going and and finding prisoners. He said its people who actually get paid to find potential prisoners basically.

My dad was in jail fo like 10 years and i dont know about him doing anything that made the govt any money

free labor and tax payers pay for the rooms, beds, food etc for these prisoners.

Think about the amount of people employed off someone going to jail.

The police that arrests them, the judge that sentences them, their lawyer/public defender, the C.Os, the probation officer, the company that builds the jails etc. etc. It's HUGE business.

its not really the amount of jobs. jail and prison is extremely expensive to run sort of like the military industrial complex, the prison industrial complex requires a lot of big business groups to manufacture products like food and supplies from and those businesses make a lot of money from that. the money required to run jails and prisons across america come out of the tax payer pocket similar to the way wars do. that tax payer money is going straight to those big businesses.

Like another poster said that New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander is must read to explain how justice system is about money and profits off minorities. But a couple way the gov/county/state/sheriff/ jurisdiction makes money off prisoners:

1) Most states project that like $36,000 or more to incarcerate prisoners, but most county/sheriff jurisdiction cut corners(i.e. food, living conditions, upkeep of the facilities, etc..) to keep money in there pockets, the higher ups get bonus to cut these cost just like corporations.

2) Make prisoners work $.50 a hour then selling products inmates make at higher price, essentially making profit

These examples were just off the dome, but looking it up on internet or by reading books can expand upon this...

This!!! There is a reason the government continues the failed War on Drugs, too much profit to let un-violent drug use continue.
