Can we talk about the "ceiling" on prospects?

When you watch a kid play and you're thinking "How good can he be?," what exactly are you looking at...

athleticism (which is so much more than running and jumping, it's ridiculous...dunno how people don't get this by now)?
in-game IQ?
motor?
poise?
leadership?
durability?

obviously, bits and pieces of ALL of these things make a great prospect into a great player.

and the importance of these things vary by position. for example, i think the most important quality for a QB is leadership. believe it or not, ravens players respected the hell outta bum ass trent dilfer. they LISTENED to that guy and respected his toughess. there's also my Bamma Big Man Theory (which T-Rob has made his mission in life to disprove), which states: "If a big man tries ALL THE TIME, it is impossible for a big man to be sorry." That's MOTOR. RBs have to be DURABLE...that is the #1 thing for me when looking at a RB. good/quick feet is next. Alfred "First Round Talent" Morris is the latest example of this.

Anyway, just curious, because I'm tired of seeing certain guys being said to have a high "ceiling" based on nothing more than athleticism and they are SORRY in all other areas.

Can I get some feedback? Just curious.

i was listening to Mike & Mike this morning and Golic made a funny but true statement about a similar topic ...his son coined the term "underwear Olympics" to describe how players strive for great physique and run around cones to impress scouts...

but in actuality you never know until someone is put in that position its a crap shoot....you may have all the physical tools a la Jamarcus Russel but it comes down to the intangibles like dedication to perfecting your craft...

he also said that steve young said that mastering a qb playbook is tougher than law school and it made me think of some of the best young QBs over the years especially this year like luck (stanford) RGII(baylor) wilson (wisconsin) they did good academically and graduated from good/great schools RGII i think finished early? so i would take that into consideration.....you have to be highly intelligent to compete as a qb this day in age with defensive schemes and such

Ill never understand scouts and gm's who falll in love with players who "wow" at the combines and ignore the fact that on the damn tape they didnt make a fukkin play all year

Its mostly ego where people think they can make a player great

basically. you hit the nail on the head. i want as close to a finished product as possible. OBVIOUSLY, they get better with experience, but i don't want no bamma that gotta learn a whole rack of shyt. I'll take a Duncan over a Blake Griffin all day, even tho Blake is clearly learning and getting closer to maxing out. And a maxed out Blake is prolly the the damn greatest PF of all time. But, who knows if he'll max out? Duncan was READY from jump.

Duncan evne though he wasnt flashy was still considered a great prospect people were tanking for though and thought of more highly then Blake when he came out but u aint getting dudes that good who stay 4 years anymore it will never happen again

There are a few instances id take a chance.Nba moreso then football becasue in the nba you need that superstar so id take a raw player with that upside over a solid but unspectacualr dude under the right circumstance

I would be curious to know how many of these players with "high ceilings" ever reach the purported ceiling, or get anywhere near it.

I have no way of confirming, but it seems the large majority of players with "high ceilings" end up as busts.

Its just agents doing what they do every year to get their players attention

I think the great majorty are busts..i think football you have it a little more with guys like JPP who were just phyical frekas but very raw

Most raw basketball players dont beocme franchise players..I cant think of many dodes who came into the league and couldnt score and then became great offensive players eventually
