Can someone please explain the ending to Donnie Darko

I didn't really look in to the movie too deeply as others, shyt you can probably find some real deep theory conclusions on the net but what i got from it was....So many fukked up things happened to him & the people around him after that jet engine crash at his house...he found a way to go back in time with some vortex nonsense but this time be in his bed when the engine crashes in to his house, killing himself but saving the people that was hurt around him.

Highly rated as this film is, shyt was a massive colossal waste of time for me, just saying
