It seems to me that science and Islam conceptually were linked(Tawhid+study of nature). And indeed some advancements in the scientific method, astronomy, mathematics, physics, and medicine can be linked to Islam historically. You certainly cannot say the same of the contemporary Muslim world. So what happened in historically muslim countries?

Also PLEASE keep it civil ITT :youngsabo:

I'm not Muslim, of course, but I think it has something to do with the end of the medieval period and the various political shakeups around that time. Usually these discoveries aren't made and science isn't advanced in kingdoms or warlord territories, but only in empires.

The Islamic World had the game on smiddash for like 9 hundred years. Time to let the cacs shine I guess :manny:

In all seriousness, the Ottoman empire has a lot to do with the stagnation of the Arab World. The decline of the Empire and the British Empire supporting the extremist regimes helped foster a culture of extremism and fundamentalism, which is obviously not conducive to scientific advancement.

Good call. I suppose you'd also have to note the crushing of modernization in places like Egypt with Mohammed Ali and the support given to extremists by foreign powers in say Iran(?) There's definitely a western suppressive element to this whole thing. Some of these nations modernized quickly, but weren't amenable to the big boys at the time. :manny:

Probably has something to do with the instability running rampant in these nations as they have to allocate more of their resources to defense instead of R&D
