Dragonball is the father of all battle shounen anime/manga today.
That, Jojo, and FotNS, yes. You'll find a little bit of each in most any shounen.

Dragonball was certainly the most successful and influential due to it becoming a global phenomenon.

Although he treats girls nice Goku didn't have any romantic interest in girls. Goku was indifferent about beauty in woman. He viewed all girls equally in terms of beauty because he didn't have any human feelings to guide him to the human idea of beauty. He only found them stranger than men because of their features in comparison. This is a result of what Goku was used to growing up with only his Grandpa as well as his genetics. This was shown in scenes such as when Master Roshi showed him two girls with Goku not being able to tell which one was beautiful, and when Goku brought back a huge and not so attractive woman when Roshi told him to bring back a pretty woman. During the 23rd World Tournament Goku has now grown into a young adult. Where he met the girl he promised to marry as a kid - ChiChi. Goku's purity and desire to honor his grandpa led to him accepting marriage even though he doesn't have any romantic feelings for ChiChi and women in general. It took an unconventional guy like Goku, who goes against the idealogical pure hearted person, to court someone like ChiChi who attempted to follow the idealogical steps for marriage but by marrying Goku did the opposite due to not being very bright similar to how Goku misunderstood marriage by not being very bright himself. There might be a hidden message in there about how we perceive love as a species back then. Because standards for a man used to be to have a wife and child, and to be a pure person would be to have the required feelings that comes with that. But with Goku, his pureness didn't gave him any predetermined straightness because that's not what his pureness stems from. He only married a woman because she follows what she perceived to be society's standards at the time and as a result Goku felt obligated, but not romantic. It could be commentary about how we're not truly following our hearts, but rather what society determines our hearts should be like, which corresponds with themes of looking beyond society's conventions that the story provided.

There's another theme and that is the responsibility of one's actions and the rewards and that come with it.

In the RRA arc it was Goku who attracted Tao Pai Pai to near Korin's Tower, which resulted in Bora getting killed, which lead to him deciding to get all the Dragon Balls instead of keeping his Grandpa Gohan's ball for himself in order to wish Bora back to life. This selfless act led to him being rewarded by seeing Grandpa Gohan one last time during Baba's tournament.

In the Cell arc it was Goku's actions which led to the Androids and Cell being created, which resulted in hell on earth in a different timeline with his son dying at the hands of the androids. This hell and the events of the Cell Games made Goku contemplate the consequences that comes with his actions. His contemplation led to him deciding to make Gohan stronger than himself to secure the future of his own timeline as well as ridding the world of the Android threat. Goku decided that the Earth would be safer without him due to him attracting bad guys throughout his adventures (Including Tao Pai Pai!) as well as believing himself as a person wasn't suited to stay on earth due to the guilt he suffered from letting his son get tortured by Cell which almost led to the earth being eradicated and the fact that he's a Saiyan, and that Gohan has grown into a better protector (And person) than him. He was rewarded in the other world due to his pure hearted nature and the fact that he saved the earth numerous times. This also marked the growth and development of Goku coming full circle because the scale of the responsibility he took increased - from reviving a single man to defending the planet, with the rewards he received corresponding with his growth - From meeting his grandpa to spending eternity doing the thing he love with his mind at peace. It showed how selfless he's grown to be despite being unable to eliminate his selfish tendencies, as by him focusing entirely on the planet's future without expecting to die like he did, much like how he focused on reviving Bora without expecting to meet Grandpa Gohan. There's a great message there about putting your heart into the work or goodwill more than the expected rewards which corresponds with the themes surrounding Goku's mindset in his training.

It's pure genius! Especially since the events of the RRA arc directly led to the events of the Android arc and the theme that both arcs share correspond with the storytelling of the arcs, with Goku's actions attracting bad guys in both arcs.

There are even extra little touches that adds to its genius! Remember when Baba said Goku would save the world? Well, him saving the world was what led to his rewards in the Cell arc. Remember when Gohan told Goku that he doesn't need to wish him back? Well, Goku said the same thing to Gohan at the end of the Cell arc.

Not to mention that the main theme of Dragon Ball which is "There's always someone stronger" relates to Goku's decision to stay dead, because he believes that he could potentially attract a stronger villain.

Seriously, it's amazing how Toriyama wrote the story by the seat of his pants. It's even more amazing to think that he probably wasn't even aware of his genius!
