IOSCO COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - A suspect's son is speaking out on why he called the police involving a case of animal sex abuse.
The Iosco County Prosecutor, Jim Bacarella, says that 64-year-old Michael Johnston is accused of being part of a ring that uses animals to commit crimes.
Bacarella says he has never seen a case like this, and the suspect's son, Chris Johnston, says he is now getting threats for reporting his dad to police.
Chris has had a troubled relationship with his father, Michael.
It was Chris who contacted the police about what he saw on his father's electronic device.
"My son found the tablet and brought it to me," says Chris.
And what Johnston says what he saw on his father's unlocked tablet made him sick.
He says some videos showed the 64-year-old involved in bestiality with his dog.
"I told my family about it," says Chris. "No one believed me."
The Michigan State Police began an investigation, which indicated that Johnston, who lives in East Tawas, allegedly was involved in a ring with other people who liked sexual interaction with dogs.
"I think we characterized it as kind of a Tinder for people and dogs," says Bacarella.
He says it's one of the most disturbing cases he has seen in his career.
"Especially if you love animals, and to see them treated like this is heart-wrenching," he says.
Investigators say images of child pornography were also found on Johnston's electronic device.
When Michael Johnston became aware he might be arrested, investigators say he fled to Alabama but was arrested on the warrant in late April.
He was extradited to Michigan on Sunday and formally arraigned in Iosco County on Tuesday.
Chris Johnston says he has been getting threatening phone calls from a woman who knows Michael Johnston.
"They were going to come shoot my house up, literally," says Johnston.
Police are investigating the threats.
"We take very seriously when a witness is being threatened because it completely undermines the justice system," says Bacarella.
Chris Johnston, who says he served in the military, doesn't have second thoughts about calling the police with information that now has his dad in jail.
"I have no remorse for people like that," he says. "He can be my blood or not, but I don't care."
ABC 12 has learned that there are investigations underway in other states, including Missouri and Wisconsin, involving people who may have been participating in this alleged activity with Michael Johnston.
Michael faces nine felonies in all. His attorney could not be reached for comment.
