Yes, it's absolutely a religion, since its original form involves belief in reincarnation, karma, supernatural beings (though not Gods in the Abrahamic sense,) but it can be secularized more easily than other religions because of its inherently pragmatic framework, and some sects emphasize the supernatural elements less. What it takes depends on the specific form of Buddhism, but read up on the 4 Noble Truths for starters. The main point is to end human suffering through Enlightenment, which allows you to experience the true nature of things. Attaining enlightenment usually requires rigorous, disciplined practice, usually of one or more forms of meditation along with adhering to a code of ethical and personal conduct.

like how Islam is practiced a certain way in Canada and a different way in Qutar -

I'm reading up on 4 noble truths now...
