Last November, Ang Lee hopped onboard a major project. He was set to direct a Bruce Lee biopic, with his son Mason starring as the Martial Arts legend. Talented screenwriter Dan Futterman (Capote, Foxcatcher) will pen the script. I’m now hearing this one starts production in late April.
Lee has been stuck in a rut of big studio machinery of late, with “Taking Woodstock,” “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” and “Gemini Man.” It seems as though he may have lost his mojo. What a better way to concoct a comeback than to tackle Bruce Lee. This one has the full approval of the Lee estate.
If you lived through ‘90s, and aughts cinema, Lee could do no wrong. Almost every film he made turned into gold: “Eat Drink, Man Woman,” “The Wedding Banquet,” “Sense and Sensibility,” “The Ice Strom,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Lust Caution” “Life of Pi” … Even his 2003 “Hulk” was one of the more artful superhero movies ever made.
