The new Brooklyn Nets rolled out their new stars Friday afternoon in a press conference/pep rally at Borough Hall - the duo that GM Billy King calls the best backcourt in the NBA - and it didnt take long for Brooklyn to declare an all-out hoops war on Manhattan.
Standing in front of about 1,000 fans whod come to cheer on recently re-signed guard Deron Williams ($98 million over five years) and new acquisition Joe Johnson (four years, $89 million), Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz got down to business - and insults.
For nearly 40 years the Manhattan Knicks have shown they cant bring the championship home to New York, so its going to take the Brooklyn Nets to get the job done, Markowitz bellowed. So move over Manhattan - enough airballs. You had your chance.
Markowitz got a little support from Johnson, who also proclaimed the Nets the best team when asked whos tops in New York.
The Nets, definitely the Nets, Johnson said.
It was Markowitz, however, who carried the spear for Brooklyn, even dissing Madison Square Garden, the mecca of basketball.
Now that the Barkley Center is in town the national basketball spotlight is focused on Brooklyns big stage and Madison Square Garden just doesnt have that same sparkle anymore, he said. By the way, for any Brooklynites still rooting for the Manhattan Knicks, as of November and on Im giving you fair warming. Its treason to support the outer boroughs team over our Brooklyn Nets.
Besides when it comes down to it, we all know the Brooklyn Nets will shut down the Manhattan Knicks when they play for the first time.
It's not just about winning a local championship or a regional championship," the coach said. "It's really about winning an NBA championship, and that's what our focus is on.
