Asked if, knowing what he knows now, he would have stayed in WWE or still gone to WCW, Bret Hart said he would have stayed for numerous reasons including backstage politics, their unwillingness to use him correctly and, specifically, Goldberg.

“I’m sorry that I ever went there for a lot of reasons ... including Goldberg’s kick in the head. Bill was one of those kind of guys that, the more he was wrestling, the more total disregard for the safety of the wrestlers he was working with. It didn’t matter. I remember they’d pat him on the back and tell him what a great job he did. ... I remember telling Bill before I worked with him, ‘Whatever you do, don’t hurt me.’ It’s like 10 minutes later, he kicks me as hard as he can in the head. He didn’t know any better.

“And the people that told him how great he was, they didn’t do anybody any service either by not educating him and telling him we’re not crash test dummies. You actually have to protect the guy you’re working with.”

I love the fact that every time Bret discusses Goldberg concussing him, the headline always something like "Bret trashes/buries/whatever Goldberg," but when you actually read or listen to the interview, he's far more gracious and kind to the guy that ended his career than I would be. Dude basically said that Goldberg was untrained and reckless, and people seem to read actual malice into it.

I don't doubt that Bret had hate for Goldberg in his heart at some point, but even in his book he seems to blame the system training and coddling Goldberg over Goldberg himself.

Also, not surprising that he thinks he should've stayed in the WWF: Every report from 1997 indicates that Bret never wanted to leave and Vince pushed him out with his intentions to breach his contract and not pay him his full 20 years salary.

Yeah I've talked about this in past threads. Bret called Goldberg a kind and caring guy on his DVD but he's also shyt on Bill a lot too. I don't blame him though. That kick ended his career and was probably the reason he had a stroke.

The one wrestler that Bret dislikes that has always miffed me was Dean Malenko.

I wish Bret never left too. Most importantly, Owen doesn't fall from the rafters if all the Harts are still there. Second, Bret did his best character work as a heel during the Attitude era. It probably would've kept someone else from coming up the card later though. The Rock was gonna make it to the top no matter what and Triple H still would've been the best politician in the game so it wouldn't have been them. Him and Kurt Angle could've had a fun program.

I wonder who he would've shyt on instead of El Dandy.

Is Goldberg to blame? Or is it Goldberg’s trainer?

Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker is indirectly responsible for ending Bret’s career.

Man the attitude era would’ve been so much even better if Bret would’ve stayed. He could still go and could’ve been a top guy to beef with Rock and Austin.

Plus like you said Owen would’ve still been alive and they could’ve kept the DX-Hart Foundation beef going.

Him and HBK had some of the best beef chemistry ever cause the mutual dislike was real. They could’ve feuded some more. Imagine the matches he could’ve had with Jericho and Angle. :whew:

Owen in the 2000s would've been great. Not having Owen/Eddy or Owen/Jericho or Owen/Ben-"ah can't say his name" matches really sucks. I think Owen could have a career resurgence since the WWE was really pushing workrate at the start of the 2000s.

Its ironic a goldberg kick resembling an HBK superkick finished the guy off

First he was finished in wwf by michaels with his own sharpshooter

Then in wcw by a kick like HBKs

:ohhh:
