When I do pushups, I breathe out when I lower myself down, and breathe in when I raise myself up. Whenever I lift weights, I breathe out when I'm lifting up, and breathe in when I lower the weight. I read that holding your breath when you do pushups, or lift weights can lead to a pulmonary event. I've searched the net, and some sites say do the opposite. Does anyone have a opinion on this?

Inhale on relaxation (i.e. down part of bench/squats/curls etc, up part of tricep pushdowns), hold breath through contraction (i.e. up part), exhale at the top.

You want your bloodstream to be full of oxygen while you are moving the load, so breathing during the hard part is a no go.
