‘Bloodsport’ Remake: Because The World Needs More Remakes Of ’80s Martial Arts Biopics

Well, here’s a remake with seemingly no demand whatsoever, and yet has somehow materialized via its own force of will: Bloodsport, the 1988 martial arts flick starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as the American martial artist Frank Dux, is getting a remake. And it will be totally like the original, except for the fact that the original was loosely based on the true story of Dux’s journey “to do his Ninjutsu master proud” by winning the Kumite, a “full-contact tournament that has been known to turn deadly,” while this remake will somehow be about a bunch of mercenaries who “collide with the underground world of Brazilian Vale Tudo fighting.”

So… it’s a essentially a remake in name only—Relativity, who is producing the film, seems to want to capitalize on whatever value or popularity they think the name Bloodsport still has, while making what seems like a film only tangentially connected to Frank Dux’s world of martial arts.

The remake will be helmed by Salt director Philip Noyce, with no word yet on who will step into Jean-Claude Van Damme’s nigh-incomprehensible accent. But know this: there will likely be lots of kicking in slow motion. So there’s that.
Watch they get Channing Tatum to play Frank Dukes or some silly shyt
