Blackface Yearbook Photo At Washington High School Causes Controversy

A high school student has come under fire over a yearbook photograph showing her wearing dark make-up – which some say looks like blackface.
The image shows the white teenager, a student at Shorewood High School in Shoreline, Washington, with dark makeup with the text: ‘Do you think this is my color?’
It was included on a page of Snapchat images sent and saved by fellow students, including photographs of other teens pulling faces or wearing bizarre costumes.
The girl’s photo caused outrage when it was shared online.
‘There have been pretty mean comments,’ fellow student Case Macklin told King5. ‘Some people have actually been telling her to go kill herself.’
Many student said they believe the girl, identified only as Rachel, did not mean to be offensive and that the photo just looks like ‘a really, really bad tan’ or as if she is wearing heavy bronzer.
‘Shorewood is a culturally diverse and accepting community, and virtually no one, including Rachel, would purposefully do anything offensive,’ wrote one defender on Twitter.
Yeah, well, not everyone is so quick to offer a defense or forgiveness…
‘Just because it may not be offensive to you, it still may be offensive to other minority groups,’ fellow student Melen Ghebrai, a member of the Black Student Union, told King5.
Others shared the principal’s telephone number on Twitter and implored people to call him to air their complaints about the photo.
Since the outrage online, the school has apologized for the oversight and said it will be issuing a letter of apology to students and parents.
‘It’s clearly hurtful,’ said Craig Degginger from Shoreline Schools. ‘That image should not have been included in the Shorewood High School Yearbook.’
It is not clear whether the girl in the photograph will face any punishment for her part. The district has not responded to requests for comment from DailyMail.com.
