Educator Sharif El-Mekki is most known for introducing free laundromats in his schools that caused attendance to increase. Mekki opened the laundromat because students were being bullied in school because their clothes weren’t clean. Mekki founded The Center for Black Educator Development that focuses on supporting and encouraging black people to be educators. The organization recently received a grant of $300,000 from Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris according to the Notebook.
