I listened to a very interesting Hidden Brain podcast about the need for more Black doctors. The podcast pointed out the fact that Black doctors are more successful in convincing Black people to go for check ups and preventative care than white doctors. It makes sense however we live ina society that is obsessed with color blindness and wants to turn a blind eye to the facts.

I like the story because it shows a person recognizing a problem, analyzing it and trying to find a solution that addresses it directly. There are threads in other sections of the board about Blacks in Medical School. Dwindling numbers of Black men going on to become physicians.

When problems come up, leaders emerge and people can tell who they are by their actions. You can also tell who is interested in just flapping their gums and solving nothing. In those threads, I posted the success of Xavier University, following the blueprint laid out by Norman Francis.

Xavier University has a formidable and nationally known history of producing doctors, which can be credited to Norman Francis, the institutions long-serving president [14]. In the 1970s, Francis read a report that caused him great concern — the report sounded the alarm that the number of Black doctors in the U.S. was dwindling at a steady pace. As a man of action, Francis decided to put his focus on becoming a major producer of Blacks in STEM and more specifically, Black doctors. Because of these consistent efforts over many decades, Xavier produces more Black students who apply to and graduate from medical school than any other college or university in the country [15].

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans thoroughfare named for the former president of the Confederacy will be renamed next year to honor a local civil rights icon and longtime president of a historically Black university, the City Council decided Thursday.

Jefferson Davis Parkway will become Norman C. Francis Parkway in January. Francis was the first Black graduate of the law school at Loyola University of New Orleans. The street being named for him runs by Xavier University of Louisiana, a historically Black university that was founded by Catholic nuns. Francis served as Xavier’s president from 1968 until 2015.

The vote to rename the street was 7-0, with council members, meeting online, expressing their happiness that the honor was being bestowed on Francis, 89, while he is alive to see it.

The gifts are among the largest private donations to any historically Black college or university, with $175 million each going to Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College and Morehouse School of Medicine. Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science will receive $75 million. Xavier University of Louisiana, which is opening a new medical school, will also receive a $5 million grant
