Is it just me have they all been meh to mid?

One Night in Miami, Judas and The Black Messiah, and Without Remorse.

They're not terrible films, but they're not great either. Especially when you consider the actual story they're trying to tell. The characters fall flat or the casting isn't quite right or even the story is somewhat disjointed.

None of those movies, IMO, even reach an 8.

Am I trippin?

You tripping on Judas one, as that was great. Haven't seen the other two, but you might not be far off with Without Remorse. One Night in Miami I hear is good, but I did honestly feel the casting is suspect. I'll better judge upon seeing tho.

Based on 2 out of those 3 movies, I just wanted to go on a rant. I feel like Hollywood has a repeated urge to use historical pieces to tell African-American stories of today, and I think that a lot of messages just don't permeate mainstream culture as well as they should as a result. The person who seeks out movies around race purposefully is likely already woke or empathetic to the struggle and so it feels kinda like a circle jerk.

(FWIW these movies are more accessible than 12 Years a Slave or Green Book and others)

Only seen Judas from that crop. But I’m tired of the serious/historical black movie. I’d take a coming of age story, and good black comedy, a low budget action flick lol, something else. I want a fun new movie to watch

Judas is my favorite of the year so far. Still don’t understand why the coli in general was so lukewarm toward it

Malcolm and Marie?

The pandemic has cramped stuff together that originally wasn’t but that’s a pretty good range of black representation.

Just missing a black rom-com.
