A young and promising community activist was shot to death Wednesday (Aug 21) in Washington D.C. on the city’s Southeast Side.
According to local D.C. news channel Fox 5, Timothy Dawkins, 24, was shot multiple times around 6:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday evening. A Washington D.C. police spokesperson told Fox 5 that a gunman has not been identified nor has a motive been determined for the fatal shooting.
Dawkins (pictured) was shot at the 4200 block of 4th St., SE, which is right near his residence. The aspiring minister was pronounced dead when a medical team arrived at the scene. Dawkins leaves behind a wife and 2-year-old son.
Friends of Dawkins claim he spent most of his time trying to make a difference in his problematic community, which has been plagued with crime and violence. One of Dawkins’ friends, Trayvon White is a Ward 8 Representative for the D.C. State Board of Education. White made the following comments to Fox 5 about his late friend and community ally:
“He was an old soul; a soldier. Whenever I needed him, he was there. We just traveled with some kids to Tennessee doing training. Tim was just very different. You’re talking about a young man who went to seminary school when he was 21. Someone who got married when he was 21. He was a very positive young man and had a bright future.” (MyFoxDC.com)
So far this summer, 20 shootings have occurred on the city block where Dawkins was fatally shot. His family is currently making funeral arrangements for the slain community activist.
