A still from one the ads that have boosted the public advocate’s campaign. The poll shows that Bill de Blasio would comfortably beat Christine Quinn in a runoff.

With four weeks left in the Democratic primary for mayor, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio has vaulted into first place after re-introducing himself to voters in a week of TV advertising, a poll released Tuesday shows.

The once-lagging candidate is now garnering 30% of the vote among Democratic primary voters, compared to 24% for Christine Quinn, 22% for Bill Thompson and 10% for Anthony Weiner.

In a potential primary runoff against Quinn, the poll has de Blasio winning 54% to 38%.

De Blasio spokesman Dan Levitan tweeted that the surge had nothing to do with the television ad featuring de Blasio's son, Dante, and his famous afro because most of the polling “probably occurred” before the ad “had a chance to sink in.”

De Blasio — who began climbing in the pollls when Weiner’s campaign was rocked by a sexting scandal — jumped ahead of Quinn race thanks to support from a large percentage of likely Democratic voters who are critical of the Police Department’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy, according to the Quinnipiac poll.

Quinn has said she would keep Raymond Kelly — a proponent of stop and frisk — as police commissioner, while de Blasio has been highly critical of stop-and-frisk policing and has said the police commissioner must go.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has lead in polls throughout the campaign season, is now placing second, behind Public Advocate Bill de Blasio.

About 60% of likely Democratic voters said they believed stop-and-frisk was “excessive” and “harasses innocent people,” while 31% said it was an acceptable policing tactic that helped make the city safer.

Even though Weiner has vowed to stay in the race, a majority of Democratic primary voters said they wish he would quit.

About 55% of voters “wish he’d go away and 51%s said the they’d never vote for him,” Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac Polling Institute, said in a statement.

Rounding out the bottom of the field, city Controller John Liu came in with 6% and former City Councilman Sal Albanese has 1%. Another 7% said they were undecided.

The poll also measured support for the creation of an inspector general who would independently monitor the Police Department. Among likely Democratic voters, 66% suppor the monitor.

Thompson, the only black candidate in the race, got 39% of the black vote, followed by 22% for de Blasio and 19% for Quinn.

But Quinn didn’t clean up among women voters. About 31 percent of women went for de Blasio, followed by 26 percent for Quinn and 23 percent for Thompson.
