Despite Bill Belichick's shift from the NFL to college football, the eight-time Super Bowl champion coach still has ideas on how to improve the NFL.

During his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, Belichick proposed that the NFL should shift to a draft lottery system similar to the NBA's to prevent teams from tanking.

"I was never involved in (tanking) but I don't know what happens somewhere else. It's different than the NBA. The NBA kind of rectified that by having a lottery. So even if you're the worst team, you're not guaranteed the first pick," Belichick said (1:28:00 mark). "In the NFL, that's not quite the case. If you are the worst team, you do get the first pick."

"Personally, I don't think it would be a bad idea for the competitiveness of the sport to do something similar to what basketball does with those lottery picks," Belichick said. "Then we wouldn't be having this conversation — well we might be having it, but there'd be other circumstances besides just your record. There'd be actually a lottery part of it. But that's not a decision for me to make, that's just a suggestion."

Different sport than the NBA and a much different sized talent pool. Any position in the NBA can have a true franchise player that can help win an NBA Championship as the #1 option. You don't have that in the NFL. You pretty much need a QB, and some teams really are just THAT bad. It's harder to recover in the NFL from poor signings as well because of the hard cap.

how are we still debating this crap?

truth be told, the teams who are most in need of a QB (Raiders, Giants, a couple of others) have fallen down the board because they've won games late.

You'll never fix how fans react to wanting their teams to lose and it comes down to something Belichick will deny (and part of why NFL teams don't want him anymore):

Teams want you picking high up because nobody trusts those front offices to make those picks, so that pick must be made for them. For example, if the Pats take Hunter, at least if he fails nobody can bytch about the process that led them to him. Look at the Jags. Their lesbian QB hasn't panned out the way they hoped but nobody's wondering why they didn't trade down with SF for a haul.

Weird argument to make after watching the Giants and Raiders go out of their way to win games that did major harm to their draft placement. The draft system is really good and is really good at something the NBA can't replicate: giving teams/fans hope. Draft picks matter and if you can get the right GM/coach you can turn your team around in 2-3 years. Just look at the Lions. Hell, look at what Washington did this year. Flip side look at what happened to the Bears despite getting the #1 pick.

It's less of an issue in the NFL because even getting the #1 pick isn't a guarantee. I remember people shytting on the Jets for winning late and missing out on the chance to draft "generational" Trevor Lawrence. Jacksonville is still ass. now granted, Zach Wilson was ass too but the Jets aint missing out on anything by not drafting Lawrence.

That is just a team picking stupid, but the fact that being purposely bad is beneficial for some teams is a problem. I wish the NBA and NFL had lower leagues so we could have a relegation system, where the trash can go at the end of a season.
