It's not the 80s anymore though. You can't be a Flair heel and win clean. That's reserved for monster heels now. Punk is supposed to be a cheater and an apologist. Why did Austin turn heel in 2001? He needed help to beat the Rock and to get that title belt NO MATTER WHAT. "I have to beat you, Rock." That's what he said in that sit down interview but that statement wasn't understood until the aftermath. CM Punk has mostly been running from Ryback and needing help since the tie thing in Boston with Cena.

I see your point but, the sudden flip in Punk's character portrayal makes JBL's reign world's better to me. When comparing the two and I'm a major Punk fan and didn't even like JBL until years later.

The Austin turn was different he had been out of action for over a year, he was injured, he was getting older, Rock, Angle and Hunter etc had taken over in his absence. So he had legit reasons to feel desperate and doubt himself thus leading to him aligning with Vince at WM17. He had to beat Rock or it was over for him in his mind.

Punk in 2012 in is in the prime of his career there was no reason for him to magically start acting scarred and paranoid. There should been another way to make him a heel if that was the route we just had to go down.

Well there's the fact that he never beat Cena clean when it counted yet the guy he turned on beat him clean in the ring with no bullshyt or issues. His reasoning was respect and it made sense if you want to use continuity. He was behind Cena in main events all year....he was behind Lesnar when he came back....he was third string when AJ and Bryan was in the WWE title picture....he let Eve son him like a str8 up bytch..it was all adding up.

JBL and its not even close. Some of Punk Heel run has been solid but its mostly out of place because they never came up with a good reason for him turning heel. Until Lawler had the heart-attack he didn't really say anything that made me want to boo him. Punk was actually correct in all his explanations so you couldn't get mad at him. Despite brainwashing from Cena, and random cena dikk-riding legends who would talk shyt to him.

JBL portrayal was consistent throughout his entire reign, as the arrogant blow hard, who had to rely on cheating to win. Punk spends 6 months as a honorable fighting champ, then all of sudden in August he's this insecure weakling that needs cheating, Heyman, crooked refs, and a damn task force to keep the belt. It's just dumb, he could've still been a heel and continue to be a competent champ.

I voted for CM Punk, simply because JBL made me stop watching wrestling for a year (Seriously, I don't care how good of a heel he was in a technical sense, that will always mar my thoughts about JBL), but this is a very good point about why Punk's heel turn hasn't and won't fully take.

With the turn on Hardy, even if you could see his point (and really, considering Hardy's drug history immediately before and after that feud, he had a really good point), he was being a pedantic jackass about it. Thus, justified heel turn. With this heel turn, he was justified in his thoughts, his character and the strength of his wrestling persona turned toward the negative needlessly and they waited too long to turn him fully heel.

The strength of this run is solely found in the strength of Punk and Heyman as performers.

After the Eddie feud, the rest of that year can kick rocks. He was the champion during a weak-ass year for SD, and then proceeded to have boring-ass main events after he lost it and tried to get it back. Without a microphone, JBL's reign was pure trash.

JBL was fukking trash and deaded the entire brand. I never fukked with that show when JBL was on top. Never bought him at that main event level. U.S. champ at best.

So what you want about how either guy generated heat but at least Punk has good/decent matches. A JBL match was guaranteed .
