Read an article (ill post it when i get home) where Neil Brennan said Tarinto writes better Black characters then Spike (i.e pulp fiction). Whether you agree/disagree) who is the best to you and why?

As annoying as Tarrantino can be, he does a good job of writing for women, for white men, for black men.

I'd say the writers for the Wire did an outstanding job and most of them were cacs

Good point on the Wire

Part of me has to wonder how much did they let them improvise lines. No white dude who didn't grow up in the hood could write dialogue like that.

"What I tell you about playin those fukkin away games?"

That didn't come from David Simon's mind...

Honestly a lot of the lines were definitely not improvised. Most of them come off as very hollow and stiff by the lesser-skilled actors on the cast.

Also keep in mind most of the writers were beat writers so they were definitely in on the streets for al ong time and picked up the slang

I want to say Thomas Lee Wright for New Jack City...I was looking this up the other day though, Barry Michael Cooper Co-wrote the screenplay, who I'm assuming is black...he wrote Above the Rim and Sugar Hill.

"Sit Yo five dollar ass down before I make change!"

"Cancel that bytch ill buy another one"

I know that, perhaps. There weren't too many talented actors on the show...but the way they were just delivered lines just came across like street dudes I knew.

According to virtually all the actors, especially those who aren't native to Baltimore, all the dialogue and slang came specifically up by Simon.

it's a couple of years old but yeah he said this.
Race Matters: Chappelle’s Show Co-Creator Neal Brennan Says “Quentin Tarantino Is The Best Black Screenwriter”

On Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee

Some people question whether a white person should even be writing black characters.

NB: I think anyone can write about anything that they have knowledge of and exposure to. I think the best black screenwriter is Quentin Tarantino. Quentin may write better black characters than Spike. I mean, Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction is fukking unbelievable. That would be Exhibit A. I actually think that’s why Spike gets mad at Quentin. Quentin happens to write unbelievably rich black characters.

George Pelecanos is one of my favorite authors...he was one of the writer's on The Wire. His books have dialogue exactly like The Wire.
