WASHINGTON – Bernard Hopkins, boxing’s ageless wonder at 49, is one victory from becoming the undisputed world light-heavyweight champion and already daring unbeaten pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather to a showdown.

Hopkins, the oldest major world champion in boxing history, won a split decision Saturday over Kazak fighter Beibut Shumenov to take the World Boxing Association title and keep his International Boxing Federation crown.

“The only thing I want to know before I leave this game is that I gave it all,” Hopkins said.

“It’s another page. Every page is history. Money is great but history is something you can’t get rid of.”

Now Hopkins, who turns 50 in January, wants to meet Haitian-born Canadian southpaw Adonis Stevenson, who defends his World Boxing Council belt next month against Poland’s Andrzej Fonfara.

Hopkins, who made 20 defenses of his middleweight crown and ruled that division for a decade, said he would even fight Montreal-based Stevenson in Canada, where nearly all of his fights have been staged.

“I want to be the undisputed champion by the end of this year. Between now and January 2015, let’s do it,” Hopkins said.

“I set out to be the best in the light-heavyweight division. I’m thirsty for that like I was at middleweight.”

But when pondering what could be the final act of a career that began in 1988, Hopkins made it clear he hopes welterweight star Mayweather would answer his challenge to jump up in weight while he drops and they meet at middleweight.

“I’ll give anybody a run for their money. If they are unbeaten I will take their 0, give them their first loss,” Hopkins said. “I could make 165, 168 (pounds) real comfortably.”

Mayweather, 45-0, is nearing one of boxing’s most iconic numbers, the 49-0 career record of the late heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano.

“If I do a fight, it would be one of the biggest in the world. We will do it in a stadium somewhere,” Hopkins said.

“After I become the undisputed light-heavyweight champion of the world, if there was one big fight out there, I know what I would call it – 50-50. He wants to pass Marciano. He wants to get to 50 and I am 50. That would be huge.

“I would love to do that. But let me get past Stevenson first.”

‘Not fighting creampuffs’

Hopkins listed Mayweather, the sport’s top pay-per-view money spinner, as the top active pound-for-pound fighter with Andre Ward next.

“After that, I’m not too far from that number three. I’m not out there fighting creampuffs,” Hopkins said.

Hopkins said the greatest sports feat he has seen was Michael Jordan’s six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls.

“I’m up there with the Miami Heat, winning two or three straight,” Hopkins said. “I want to do as much as I can to (put myself in) that conversation.”

Hopkins knocked down Shumenov in the 11th round but still has not stopped a foe inside the distance since Oscar de la Hoya in 2004.

“I can’t get a damn knockout,” Hopkins said. “Maybe the knockout will come when I fight Stevenson.”

What's crazy is that this fight has a better chance of happening than a Floyd/Manny fight. That being said I think the possibility of it actually happening is between slim and none but that shouldn't stop folks from discussing "What if?"...so who would win between B-Hop and Floyd at middlweight?

wtf makes Hopkins think a little dude who OD's on fried chicken while training and still can't break 152 on the scale could jump up to 165...
Mayweather plays scale games IMO.........

With the maniacal way he trains I truly doubt he only losses 5-10 pounds during camp, something is off there and it makes little sense to me......He has to be even at least 5-10 more pounds heavier then he implies

He definitely small compared to a BHOP........

I still think Mayweather is heavier than televised, Mayweather only alluded to this once post prison and he admitted he was 10-15 pounds heavier than his usual weight, contrary to him deteriorating......

IDK, lil guys like Floyd shouldnt be towering over and man handing JMW, Floyd is a tricky case though.................

Floyd ain't really tower over him though he was just bigger than him, they still the same size, Floyd use to fight at JMM's prime white class when he was in his physical prime

Bhop never fought at WW, its not like he stared at WW and climbed to light heavy. He's a regular sized man, Floyd is a small man. Trinidad was too small for hopkins, he would've got his ass whipped either way, but he was still small.

Trust me I wouldnt favor Floyd vs BHOP in a match, maybe when BHOP was at 160, but folating betwen 168-175 he's too big, and he hits much harder now than in back in those days

Not to mention the 1st pic from the ODH weigh in was a JMW fight, contrary to the 2nd which was at 147 vs Guerrero

He's visibly bigger and fights big these days also. I understand the 30 day weigh in and such, I just feel he's used to weighing 155-160 ish in between fights

How much do yall think he weighs in at the start of camp???

About 155-160 like you said.

He's 37 years old. He's not walking around at no damn 150 like he claims. He's no longer in his physical prime, so he's gonna naturally become heavier than he used to be.

He doesnt walk around HUGE in between fights, but a 5'8 155-160 lb normal guy is not big at all. I believe Floyd cuts at max about 8-13 lbs for the fight, which isnt alot, and I think you're dead on in your assessment of his weight.
