Culture doesn't form in a vacuum. The Jews, for example, had their culture significantly affected by living in and around various anti-semitic communities. I doubt Ben would deny the explicitly racist history of the United States, so it would be absurd to suggest that 300 years of brutally racist history would have no effect on a nascent culture. Separating culture and race in this context is asinine.
Looting usually isn't a rational, planned out response, but rather an emotional outburst. It wasn't heavily organized, it was a wildfire that spread organically. Yes, it would have been more potent if it aimed itself in the oppressive entities, but this wasn't a protest, it was a riot. This isn't to say that riots don't have their place, it's just that they're a different beast than an organized protest.
He says black people should "act like a mensch, act like a human being", but when you've been treated like an animal your entire life, conforming to the oppressor's definition of civility isn't going to be your top priority. And on the numerous occasions black people have "acted like a mensch", it didn't do much to combat a system that profits off of black exploitation. By all accounts, MLK "acted like a mensch" and got a bullet for it.
