My question is how much of this can be credited to Dre? Bernie Grundman and Brian Gardner were involved since Straight outta Compton for mastering. Isn't making it sound crisp part of that process?
Mastering and mixing are two different processes

Another one is Live by the Gun by Tony Yayo. When that came out everybody thought it was Dre and then the production credits came out and it turned out to be Focus. I don't think anyone from G-Unit even tried to clear it up at first because a Dre beat for Yayo was a good look.

Most definitely:

The only thing that gave it away was the mixing but thematically it was Dres sound from that era with sprinkles on. Focus is a very dope producer. If you listen to these clips its obvious what is missing is that Dre reconstruction I mentioned where he makes the bass knock and snares crisp with a whole load of polish and positioned to perfection:

That is Dre's greatest talent as he's a preternaturally skilled engineer, first and foremost, that sees beats with a vision that even the one who made em can't perceive or hit without him. All you've got to do is listen to the difference after he's laced it. Focus and Khalil were a huge part of the Detox sound we didn't hear.

despite the fact that Ren clearly says Fred Wreck in the beginning of the track when I first heard it I thought that Dre had a hand in it

To this day I still don't believe Dre didn't have something to do with this:

Produced by Teddy Riley and Skylz on the credits.

What about that beat would make you think he had something to do with it?

A guess.

That was the original recording with one verse, no diss. Dre leaves, somehow Blackstreet ask him to do a feature, fortuitously they've also independently flipped the same sample into a track very much like the one Pac worked on with a ex friend of theirs called Aaron. Pac, inspired randomly and for absolutely no reason to do with the above events, tacks on a second verse going at Dre talking about non players on stolen beats that don't belong to them and adds it to his album.

Then, in a totally unrelated coincidence, Blackstreet have also reused another Pac sample from another planned single. Its a miracle!

Like I said, its a guess but the odds of that happening naturally are slim. Dre is the common link, the petty would be comprehendable in that situation given how DR was going at him and he needed to keep his name out there. I think that was Dres beat he made for Danny Boys album, he took it with him, Jimmy shopped it to Blackstreet (also on Interscope), Pac heard about it, added the diss, got C&D'd because its Dres beat then remade the track for 7 Day Theory.

That and the difference between the leaked version linked and the retail has that signature Dre polish that makes his work very noticeable, even if uncredited.
