The following is the structure of the Beat Club Weekly Production Analysis. i obviously have been thinking about this for a while.
- The "facilitator" will choose an artist discog, a producer, or a project. This flexibility allows us to:
1. Artist discog- Study the artist ear and how artists make production selections. Also, in conjunction with context and experience, it will illustrate how that ear can change over time. I think this will help us develop our own artists better.
2. Producer- Recognize the total scope of production practices from arrangement and sequencing, to
elements of the mix and effect choices over the course of several works.
3. Project/Album- Look at how theme and tone is supported through production. Remember, hip-hop albums in theory should intend on conveying an idea or group of ideas through music, lyrics, or both. Does the project do that? Why or why not?
I think that each facilitator should choose key elements of the artist, producer, or project to focus in on understanding. I will illustrate this in my first entry.
- Acquisition of music: We will assume that everyone has the capability of finding the music that we will study.
- When facilitators choose one of the above, please link additional materials to the thread that can support our discussion. Videos, interviews (especially for producers), etc. are all fair game. This makes it something that we can refer back to later.
- We are looking for in-depth conversation among artists and producers about their vision and practice. It needs not be said to leave the politics and chicanery out of these threads (and other forums).
- I think that what would be cool is if we chose certain elements of the production to actually construct our own beats. This is what we do at www.computermusicacademy.com, and it has definitely made me think deeper about my own production.
Let me know what you think. If you can give me some feedback tonight, I will put it up ASAP. I have a great idea of where to start.
