Torn about this. Part of me thinks its great for obvious reasons, but I also think this is just another example of us crow-barring American ideals into a country that doesn't want them. These women are absolutely courageous to be doing what they're doing, but having worked quite a bit with the Afghan Army, I don't see them ever actually getting integrated into the system.

Seems like more of something to hang our hat on.

Its also frustrating to see how we handle training the Afghan Army. Counting off in English, training them through interpreters, and what not. Somewhere there's some high ranking officer patting himself on the back for this mess.

I havent watched this yet but there's an interesting example currently on the BBC website of how screwed up our Afghan policy has been. There's a nice heartwarming piece about a female Afghan helicopter pilot in the nice new Afghan army that we're handing over to. And there's a little side story about a female Afghan paratrooper as well. The piece does point out that both these women originally qualified for the Afghan army in the 1980s. What it doesn't say is that therefore presumably both these women qualified for the Soviet-led Afghan army, that we were arming the mujahideen to destroy.

Dunno if this is in the doc, bu it made me chuckle, nevertheless.
