It looks like DICE is already working on a proper sequel to Battlefield 3. The Origin listing for Medal of Honor: Warfighter mentions Battlefield 4 in passing.

The listing mentioned that pre-ordering Warfighter will get you exclusive access to the beta test for Battlefield 4. There was no mention of the timing of the beta. EA has since edited Origin to remove the reference to BF4. They probably swore a lot while doing it.

"BF4? Maybe one day. Remember, if it’s not on Battlefield - The award winning franchise from EA / DICE it’s not official," said the official BF Twitter.

A new Battlefield in 2013 doesn't seem unrealistic. EA has stated on numerous occasions their intention to unseat Call of Duty in the shooter market. In order to do that, they'd need to release a new shooter every fall like COD. I guess they're looking to turn Medal of Honor and Battlefield into a tag team.

The idea of more frequent Battlefield sequels might not be pleasant to some series fans. COD's annual schedule has arguably led to some same-y sequels with little to no upgrades. However, EA knows BF is one of their hottest properties so they're naturally going to try to maximize their profits from it, for better or worse.

I wouldnt cop a new BF on this gen of systems. I would get a new bad company because its on a smaller scale but if you gonna get a new BF it would need more players per match..and if they cant do it now..they wont be able to do it this gen and should wait til the next gen.

Battlefield 4 will not take the shooter series into a different era. DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson said at GDC Europe today that BF4 will be set in the present day.

"We still want to stay in this genre, the modern day as it is," said Troedsson (via Joystiq). "We feel this is a place we can be and continue with the series. Battlefield 4 can live in this space and be very successful."

Battlefield 3 was set in the modern era as well. In its campaign, a madman is trying to start a war between the United States and Russia. Players controlled military personnel from both countries trying to stop the plot. The game ended on a quasi-cliffhanger moment so it seems possible that BF4 could be a direct sequel.

There's really no incentive for them to switch time periods. BF3 sold 8 million copies in its first month. The post-launch DLC is selling well, too, with over 1.3 million players signing up for all-in-one pass Battlefield 3 Premium. While the modern era might be well-trodden at this point, there's still an apparent hunger for shooters set in present day.

What other era would've really suited DICE's purposes? Battlefield is about large-scale battles with air, land and sea vehicles so they couldn't really go earlier than the 20th century. The series has already ventured into World War II and the Vietnam War. A Cold War game would have a lot of overlap with the latter. I suppose World War I would work but it's a tougher sell.

A futuristic setting seems plausible but they already did it with Battlefield 2142 back in 2006. Furthermore, the next game in competing series Call of Duty will be set in the future. Rather than trying to imitate its rival, it seems DICE would rather plant its flag on the modern era. With Call of Duty heading into the future, Battlefield 4 has a chance to be the definitive modern-day shooter.

BF4's beta will be held in fall 2013.

Thank god. I'm not a fan of all that futuristic weaponry in FPS. They'd add something like cloaking or regenerating shields and break the game in my eyes. That's part of the reason I couldn't get into the Crysis 2 multiplayer.

I'm already burned out on COD, so they could bring that shyt back to the revolutionary war and I wouldn't care. :old:

With that said, I feel that a lot of these FPS games are gonna follow suit if Black Ops 2 sells well though (which it will) :wtb:

The fans of this series who have been there since the days of Battlefield 2, not Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 1942 are being fukked over by DICE and EA. Battlefield 2 was almost perfect, but instead of building on the platform they had, they are finding ways to dumb it down essentially to appease console gamers and make more money. These fakkits wont even allow modding which is part of the reason the other versions of this game were so popular. Its a shame. There is absolutely no reason BF4 should be released so quickly when BF3 hasnt even been explored properly. Just gonna end up puttign out the same shyt ala Call of Duty.
