so apparently in the 90s before Batman & Robin flopped, there was a sequel planned by Joel Schumacher that would've been darker than his other Batman films. In the movie the Scarecrow would use fear gas on Batman causing the Joker returning in hallucinations. After B&R flopped, Schumacher was fired but elements of his idea made it into the Batman Begins script

Batman Triumphant was the planned sequel to Batman & Robin. The script was written by Mark Protosevich and Joel Schumacher was signed to direct it. It was cancelled after the negative reception of Batman & Robin

Cast

George Clooney as Bruce Wayne/Batman (expected)
Chris O’Donnell as dikk Grayson/Robin (expected)
Alicia Silverstone as Babara Wilson/Batgirl (expected)
Nicolas Cage, Steve Buscemi, Ewan McGregor or Jeff Goldblum as The Scarecrow (rumored)
Madonna as Harley Quinn (expected; actress never hired)
Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth (expected)
Pat Hingle as Commissioner Gordon (expected)
Jack Nicholson as The Joker (would return in Batman's mind as a result of the Scarecrow's fear toxins)
Martin Short as Mad Hatter (rumored)
Mark Linn-Baker as Man-Bat (rumored)

During the filming of Batman & Robin, Warner Bros. was impressed with the dailies. This prompted them to immediately hire Joel Schumacher to return as director for a sequel, but writer Akiva Goldsman, who worked on Batman Forever and Batman & Robin with Schumacher, turned down the chance to write the script. In late 1996, Warner Bros. and Schumacher hired Mark Protosevich to write the script for a fifth Batman film. A projected mid-1999 release date was announced. Titled Batman Triumphant, Protosevich's script had the Scarecrow as the main villain. The Joker would return as a hallucination in Batman's mind caused by the Scarecrow's fear toxin. Harley Quinn appeared as a supporting character, written as the Joker's daughter trying to get revenge on Batman for the Joker's death. George Clooney and Chris O'Donnell were set to reprise the roles of Batman and Robin, respectively. However, when Batman & Robin received negative reviews and failed to outgross any of its predecessors, Warner Bros. was unsure of their plans for Batman Triumphant and George Clooney vowed never to wear the cape and cowl again. Director of the previous two films Joel Schumacher stated in a documentary that he turned down the chance to return stating that he lost his "passion" for Batman in film and didn't want to turn the passion into just a job.

Jack Nicholson is the only interesting thing I read about this because I'm sure they would've messed Scarecrow up

Batman Triumphant (unproduced, in development circa 1998)
The role: Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow

Warner Bros. execs were happy with the job Joel Schumacher was doing on Batman & Robin before it was released and hired him to direct his third Batman movie. George Clooney and Chris O'Donnell signed on to return, and the studio was rumored to be after Howard Stern to play the Scarecrow, the movie's lead villain (even though Schumacher has said he wanted Nicolas Cage). The plot also called for The Joker to return in a Scarecrow-inspired hallucination that Batman has, with Jack Nicholson rumored to be reprising his role, and the Batman: The Animated Series character Harley Quinn was going to be another villain, written as The Joker's daughter. By the time Batman & Robin was released, the movie did poorly at the box office and even worse with the press, so the studio scrapped plans for Batman Triumphant and decided to take the Batman franchise in a different direction – a direction that didn't involve Howard Stern.

I LIVE IN A CARDBOARD BOX!
Yeah I'm glad Nolan got his hands on Scarecrow instead of Schumacher. Scarecrow is one of my favorite Bat-villains behind Joker and Two Face. Who the fukk knows what he would've done w/ him after what he did to Two Face, Bane, and Mr. Freeze.

Would've been cool to see Jack back, I guess. :yeshrug:
