The OG Bardock didn't give a shyt about Goku. He even says as much when Celipa asked him if he was around to see the birth of his son.

He only started to "care" once he realized the Saiyans were about to meet their end. What he really wanted was for Goku to grow up and kill Freeza on behalf of the Saiyans. That's about it.

Now the Super version of Bardock is a whole different story.

This movie had the original version of Bardock… the creator changed Goku’s origin story in a manga called Dragon Ball Minus back in 2015 making Bardock into a “good-hearted” saiyan.
