Top Haqqani network militant 'killed in Pakistan'
A key commander in the Pakistan-based militant Haqqani network, Badruddin Haqqani, has been killed in a US drone strike, a relative has told the BBC.
Badruddin Haqqani died last Tuesday in North Waziristan, the relative said.
The death has not been confirmed by US or Pakistani officials.
The Haqqani network is one of the most formidable foes of US forces in Afghanistan. If confirmed, the death would be a major victory for the US forces, a BBC correspondent says.
In a separate development, Nato air strikes killed a regional commander of the Pakistani Taliban on Friday inside Afghanistan, officials said.
Mullah Dadullah was killed along with a dozen of his fighters in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province. He had taken over as leader of the Taliban in Pakistan's Bajaur tribal area earlier this year.
'Haven'
The al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network has carried out some of the most high-profile attacks in Afghanistan, says the BBC's Orla Guerin in Pakistan.
Badruddin Haqqani has been described as a senior operational commander with the network and a financial boss.
The death has not been officially confirmed by the US or Pakistan.
However our correspondent says it often takes days or weeks to establish who has been killed in CIA drone strikes because of the remoteness of the areas that are targeted and the tight control of the militants.
The area where Badruddin Haqqani was reportedly killed, North Waziristan, is the group's base and is seen as a haven for Taliban and al-Qaeda militants.
